I will speak up about the recruiting video. We did one for oldest DD a few years ago and the result was terrible! I honestly feel it did her a disservice to put that in front of D1 coaches. Although I think I could do a decent one on my own now, the learning curve is a little steep! Here is what I would do now if I was putting together a skills video myself:
1. Take any opportunity you can to ask D1/D2 coaches EXACTLY what they are looking for (and not) in a skills video.
2. Watch as many skills videos as you can on Youtube and take notes on what looked impressive and what looked bush league. (PM me if you want to see bush league and I can send you a link to mine!)
3. Spend the money on a good middle of the road video editing software program for your computer (unless yours comes with one, then just make sure you know how to use it!).
4. Write down a plan ahead of time to make a 3-4 minute video. This should include a script of your daughter introducing herself and what you intend to show on film. Obviously there is a big difference between the format for a pitcher/catcher/infielder/outfielder. If your DD is like mine and wants to market herself as a "utility player," good luck in keeping that to 3 min!
5. Film ... get a series of your daughter demonstrating your pre-planned skills at her best between 1-3 times unedited.
6. Go home, edit, and see what you have on film and repeat until you both are satisfied.
This can be done well for sure by an individual, but unless you have the time to do all this and good knowledge about softball mechanics and what D1/D2 coaches are looking for, I would consider using a service for between $1,000 - 3,000. If you do your homework with a service, you should be able to get a high quality video with a little less headache on your part.
Best advice I can give you is talk to as many people as possible who have done this before and do your homework ahead of time!
Good luck!
