Rules for Dummies - Quck Someone Do This

I'm always conscious of the fact I don't know the rules as well as I should. I rarely question an umpire but more go between innings to get things clarified. I'd like to be more informed.

Is there a book/manual that will take the rules that the state of Ohio uses and through other wording and examples can explain it all? I'd like for it to state the actual rule and then go deeper into to actually teach it and leave less (though we know it won't be all) to what I (as a parent/coach/ninja) think it PROBABLY means. I suspect this version of the rule book would be about 3-4 times as long as the normal rule book but it would be very useful. Heck I know a few umpires who could use the darn thing. Additionally I'd like for there to be a chapter about 50 pages long on "Typical situations" and then "Busting the myths" and on and on.

I know ASA, USSA, etc. each have their own rules but it would be easy to have this expanded version and then read the others normal rules.

If this was done well I could see organizations making it standard reading, even mandatory.

There is what they call " Case Books" that give situations for rule interpetations. USSSA I know has them.

Sorry I can't help you with the other associations.

If they contain enough cases to cover most of what normally goes on I'm sure they would help many.

It does in the USSSA case book. It's kind of a "what if" book.

I always said.. I went to the Unemployment office looking for a job and told them I was dumb and blind... and they handed me an umpires uniform and told me, " Don't worry. You'll fit right in" ;)

I just looked and USSSA and NSA have PDF case books for free on line.

ASA has a rules book (for free) that appears to have a section that is a case book like section.

I would suggest looking at any of those. I would be a bit surprised if the HS version was much different.

case books are funny to read and many will learn things fom them.

It's a situation type book to cover things not expressed in the rule book.

I am glad to hear that USSSA has it in PDF form. Save me five bucks.. especially when USSSA has made all of us change shirts this year and have to buy new uniform tops and hats.

This procedure comes around about every four to five years.. and they charge us $38.00 per shirt and $18.00 for a hat and raised our umpire fees to $65.00 dollars so we can help pay for the lawsuit they lost awhile back ... LOL

Of course, you have to buy two new shirts .. one for the field and one for behind the plate that is larger so your pads fit underneath it.

Problem is ... so far the shirt are being changed as the first shirts that this new company made was pretty well worthless... so they are making a new batch of them.

Can't wait to see them !!!! LOL

Funny

That is one thing we noticed about NSA vs USSSA.

NSA is white tops at all times. So I think that minimizes the whole uniform deal. While USSSA has at least 2-3 different colors.

USSSA fastpitch you can only wear red shirts and red shirts only. No other color is acceptable.

The word is out that if you don't have a new shirt ... no umpiring for you. Then we got a letter from USSSA National and they said until they get the vendor in step .. we can wear our old red shirts.

On the men's side ... we have to have new shirts to do qualifiers and state events....

Which so far, hasn't made sense .... since the NEW red shirt aren't available to us yet.

Go figure that one out.

I appreciate everybody's input. I'm going to get the materials and make sure I read them and then scan over again here and there.
