Rules for picking up players for ASA qualifiers

Does anyone know if teams are allowed to pick up players for a qualifie? And if so do you have to have an ASA iD card for them since they are a last minute pick up player?

As I said on another thread that was started today, it's complicated. If the young lady did not play/was not rostered in any past ASA "championship play" tournaments for another team, you are probably ok. Your best bet is to call Warren Jones, give him the details, and see what he says.

BTW We have never had a TD check Individual ASA cards at any tournament, including USA/ASA Nationals and Eastern Nationals.

just curious -- what is ASA "Championship play" compared to a ASA qualifier or is it the same thing?

"Championship Play" in ASA is any tournament that provides the opportunity to play in a higher level tournament. So it includes both regional qualifiers (in Ohio, usually Eastern National Qualifiers), Hall of Fame qualifiers (and for that matter, the Hall of Fame tournament itself, which offers berths to USA/ASA Nationals), and USA/ASA qualifiers. Don't forget that ASA States, because they award berths to USA/ASA Nationals, are also Championship Play tournaments.

Had to explain this same situation yesterday. A rostered player whose team already won a bid to Eastern Nationals is asking for a release from current team. We agreed to the release but told parent that player would not be eligible to play in tournaments for new team competing for bids to Nationals. Parent disagreed and we said the same thing you did, please call Warren Jones if you are not satisfied with our answer.

The problem with our referrals to Warren Jones is that the ASA Code says opinions given by ASA state officials are not binding in any challenge to eligibility lodged with the ASA National. But I would prefer to think that these cases would never get to that point. BTW, I don't know that your release has any effect under the ASA Code, since the local association championships (which I interpret as ASA States) have already been held and the new ASA release provisions say a release has to be obtained before those championships. But I get that you are doing what you can to free the young lady. It is now a question whether anyone from the "outside" knows that she played with you in championship play and challenges her eligibility to play in future championship play or in nationals.
