Does a coach have to release a player when asked???? What can a player do that has a coach that will not release them?

I believe as Long as that player doesn't play for another team in the same national tournament that the team in question has qualified for if they qualified....Otherwise moot point.....

Or just call Vinnie in jersey to make a visit to the coach and say release her..... ;)

The different sanctioning bodies of softball each should have this procedure spelled out on their respective web sites. A player will not need released from any of the sanctioning bodies where a signed roster has not been filed. To cover yourself check the web sites and contact the local administrator for the sanctioning bodies in question.

some own the players... and don't let go. Sad. We always release... wish them best of luck... and can't wait to high five them the following weekend with their new team. To each his own and have fun! After-all, they are children to young adults. Let them reap their decisions good or bad for the current team and the future team.

I would think that if a player wants released and the coach and or organization refuses that it would shine a negative light on that organization. What possible advantage could there be to not letting them go?

Always a hotly debated topic. Coaches spend a great deal of time teaching & developing those players. Once they get a full grasp of the team's signage, defensive strategies, pitch calls, play calls, etc., going to another team could force that first team to take a step backwards & reinvent their strategies else risk being completely exposed when those two teams meet. If we are talking about a top tier player, then the chance is good that she is leaving a good team & going to another, which means they will see each other a few times this season. Contact CoachJWB for his wristband system (nice plug for you, CoachJWB, wherever you are)
Conversely, like Lester says...if the player doesn't want to play on that team, then one should argue she should be released.
I can argue both sides of this, depending on who is buying my beer that night. :-O

We do this for the girls, true, but we as coaches are also expected to help the team win and we owe it to the team to put them in the best position to succeed. Many coaches are against players leaving mid-season.

those that hold onto a player are wiser than us therefore image is untouchable. Controlling a kid's destiny is a cool bully move these days. May even fall into the "bossy" stuff.

9 happy players trump 13-15 PITA's. At least until and injury occurs and heck, I'd rather stress over 8 starting the game than the endless BS that comes with unhappiness in the player, parents, grand parents, step parents, 19 year old brother/sister, step-dad, step-mom, baby momma, baby daddy... you get the point.

Oh, and I don't buy a dude any beers... just sayin'

I've heard rumors of it happening right now, not mid season currently. I just have trouble wrapping my head around how it can be justified. It just seems like it's punishment for a young girl and or her family who is not happy with current situation. It does seem like bullying to me, the softball community is small and I would not want my dd to play for anyone/organization who would try to have some kind of power hold over my dd and family. I also agree with Lester that it seems to be better to let them go than pursue a situation conducive of drama and negative feelings.

you'd be surprised as to the people that don't know about a bad coach or org. And those that do know and stay.

I don't have a dog in this fight but I have been around this young lady coaching her in tee ball& coach pitch, I have a dd her age and I'm friends with their family. Time will tell whether they decide to release her, I would hope so seeing how this is not a small organization and I would think maintaining reputation would be a priority.

ri_domination.....it appears you do have a dog in the fight, even though it isn't your own DD. This is just me, but it appears as though you are doing this on behalf of a friend. I don't disagree with you doing some work to support a friend. I think we all would do that & that's why you are encouraging the "maintaining of a reputation". I have no clue who this player is or who the teams involved are. My name is Bennett & I ain't in it. :-O.

I do feel for the girl and her family and support them, I am concerned for them and any other family that feels it is time to move on. I can understand if it was June right now and I have personally made my dd remain on team that I was at wits end with simply because of how far into the season we were. I have seen others leave and wished them well. I realize every situation is different, I guess my main query would be about ethics and integrity.

Talk about a subject that is on the serious/ touchy side of things and get private messages that are threatening and obviously from alias user names.

I would think that a good reputable coach would be able to fill the spot. If the player isn't happy, release her. What good is a coach doing by strong arming a child?
RiDomination; I assume you received a PM from an alias threatening to beat up this Childs family name. If the PM came from the coach of the player your defending, then that is pathetic! I would never recommend a player to play for a coach with that type of ethic's.

Dirty laundry goes both ways! Trust me, you don't want to go there on a public forum. It never ends up positive for the kids!

Bottom line the kid will get released.. sometimes coaches feel the need to have a temper tantrum first, its pretty sad when the grown ups act like 12 year old girls.. Does anyone know of cases where players haven't been released??

Is there any player really worth fighting over to not release that player? Are we talking the second coming of Jennie Finch or Crystl Bustos? This obviously sounds as though it would not be about the best interest of the child, if a coach would not release a player. And remember that the child is what ALL concerned is what its about. Good luck to all involved....

First of all, the entire experience is for the kids not the coaches. Coaches, would you please remember what I just said!

Parents make choices for the kids I hope. Sometimes those choices are for reasons totally unrelated to fastpitch. Perhaps they don't care for the social choices of the other parents. Maybe the coaches act differently than they portrayed at tryouts. Maybe the family since joining the team has fallen on hard times financially. All these reasons are good enough for a family to make a change and quite frankly it's nobody else's business. Why not respect the choice and wish them well.

It's not the coach or organization's right to get an explanation. If the family wants to share that info so be it but don't banter them to get a reason. What you find out may be more than you want to know.
