Scoring question

Runner on third and less than two outs. Batter swings (regular swing - no slap or altered swing) and hits ball to second. No play on the runner going home so the second baseman throws to first for the out. Sacrifice or simply a ground out? If not a sacrifice, what is the difference between a fly ball to the outfield being caught and the run scoring and a ground ball to the right side of the infield and the run scoring?

Just a ground out and no sac, but also an RBI. The difference between that and a sac fly is simply that this is the way these two plays have been scored forever and that's just the way it's officially done. A common mistake is to assume scoring rules always make sense or are fair.

JoeA is right (of course!). I assume that at some point in time someone determined that a ball hit to the outfield moving up a runner was worthy of a sacrifice and one to the infield was not.

CoachJWB - a fly ball that is caught is only worthy (scored) of a sacrifice fly (plus RBI) if it scores a runner. A deep fly that is caught and moves a runner from 2B to 3B is just another out for the batter.

so, a sacrifice, is the intent to move a runner, the honus being the batter is always trying to get a hit, right? girl foes this, 8th grade school ball, she's patted on the back but she's down because she didn't get a double....

bunts will garner a sca, wether it's moving a girl from 2nd to 3rd or coming home, but i get what you are saying, a slap would not get a SAC designated in my book

but traditionally, to me, a SAC was always jotted in the book when it seemed as the batter intentionally moved a runner with the intent on having the guy behind him knock em in...make sense? if we gave everyone who moved runners on hard grounders a SAC, we'd all have our DD's batting .700, and then i'd really hear it from ringer then!
