Scoring Question

Situation:
2 outs, runner on second, 2 strikes on the batter, batter swings and misses at ball in dirt for strike three, catcher not thinking picks up ball fires to third and throws runner out at third?
Is this a strike out still for the pitcher? Or did she have to be put out? Also, who leads off the next inning since the batter wasn't technically never put out?

Thoughts?

In our situation the umpire said the girl should lead off the next inning because she was never officially put out. Also, does the pitcher get credit with a strike out?

I found this on the NSAWPA site and wasn't 100% sure how to score it. I figured yunz guys over in Ohio could get it right for us. I'm trying to find a rule to cover who is up the next inning. Here is what I thought.

Pitcher gets the K. Ball in the dirt probably kwp. Third out is 2-5 caught stealing. I couldn't find a rule that covered who is up next inning. In my unprofessional opinion The batter who struck out would not be up again next inning.
Thanks for the help

Here is my opinion. ?Batter is scored KFC, runner is out 2-5 (or whoever covered 3rd base). ?It still counts as a strikeout for the pitcher

Not a WP because the catcher fielded the pitch (I am assuming the catcher fielded the pitch, if not, then it is a WP). ?The catcher chose to make the play at 3rd base instead of at 1st base.

ASA Rule 7, Section 2, paragraph F.:
When the third out in an inning is made before the batter has completed a turn at bat, that player shall be the first batter in the next inning

NFHS Rule 7, Article 2:
After the first inning, the first batter in each inning shall be the player whose name follows that of the last batter who completed her time at bat in the preceding inning.

The batter, in the above circumstance, completed her at bat. ?She was struck out and advanced to first on a FC.

It is an uncaught third strike.

People generically call an uncaught third strike a "dropped third strike" all the time. Depending on which rule book you have, and which rule you read (it is referenced in more than one place in the rule book) , you will find it called an "uncaught third strike", a "third strike not caught by the catcher", a "dropped third strike" or "the third strike rule".

They are all the same thing: A pitched ball resulting in strike three that is not legally caught by the catcher while in-flight.

For a pitch to be considered "in-flight" it must not touch the ground before reaching the catcher. So, even if it bounces and then the catcher cleanly gloves it, it has not been caught in-flight and is considered an uncaught third strike.

The catch made by the catcher on this pitch must meet the same definition of a catch that applies to a batted fly ball (ie: securely held in the hand or mitt, has not touched the ground, the batter or the umpire, is not merely trapped against the body, etc.)

The proper batter in the next inning should be the batter who follows the girl who was at the plate on this play. What the umpire told you was wrong. Being "put out" is not the only factor here.

A batter's at-bat is completed when she EITHER becomes a batter-runner OR she is put out. The uncaught third strike caused the batter to become a batter-runner, thus her time at-bat has been completed.

See ASA Rule 1 (Definitions), Batter-Runner.

As for how this play is scored- I don't do scoring questions! ?;)

I could probably figure out, but I have to dig into my scoring books and I'll just let you guys have the fun of doing that!

I'm with van, K, but a fielder's choice, out at third...no way i'm giving the catcher a dropped third, but pitcher will get credit for a K...as far as who will be the next inning, or who to put on base for international tie breaker instances...I'd go with the next batter in the lineup, technically, girl who K-ed would have been on first if throw to third was not made and no out recorded....
