Setting Bad Examples

In today's society, disrespect is often overlooked and disregarded by those in authority positions because they want to take the path of least resistance.

If my DD even disrespected a pearent, coach and/or teammate she would learn the definition of discipline.

The problem is that parents just don't covet teaching respect the way our grandparents did.
In today's day and age, I think a lot of parents are worried about who's watching, will get the wrong idea, and call the cops or children services. I don't mean that to excuse people, because I agree with your point. Just offering a possible reason why a lot of parents "look the other way"

Alot of parents teach their kids to be disrespectful and defend them when they are.
Remember the post a while ago from MOM, she is teaching her dd to not take sh!t from anyone!!! When a kid doesn't respect and learn from their elders, how can they be productive members of society? Kids need parents, not more friends.

I've raised my children to always be respectful to others, no matter age, gender whatever. I see it when I'm around and are reassured when I have others come up and tell me how polite they are. Now, what they do or say around their friends I have no control over! Somehow, I believe that they are still alright.

Just got home from the tournament in Strausburgh. I along with hundres of other parents witnessed 3 incidents of parents and coaches in heated arguments in front of their teams, other coaches, and parents. One of the parents had to be restrained by other coaches before it came to blows. All of this in front of 12 y/o girls. In the last incident it was a 12u player begging her parents to just get in the car and leave, but they just keep arguing. Parents and coaches you need to think about the damage and examples your setting for these kids. Use the 24 hour rule, take time to think things over, chances are you will have a different opinion the next day, and your not airing your dirty laundry for all to see. Remember IT'S JUST A GAME!!! The goal is to have fun, and from what I saw today there were bunch of kids not having fun.

Classless and worthless to partake in this . It Help nobody and hurts many.

Very very surprised at what i heard from coaches and parents at the 16u field in Elryria all weekend. I thought it was me being sensitive but the mouths were awful. Even heard some parents taunting other teams players. Very disappointing. Very little sportsmanship all weekend. Hope not a new trend!

I also was at a tournament this last weekend where I heard a parent (/ fan?) taunting our players while walking around the other dug out. I was very surprised and disappointed.

Agree with that point. A few years ago, took my dd's grocery shopping. My oldest said something and second nature, hand to mouth. The looks I got from a parent was I'm calling the cops. Well, later on as we were in the milk isle, that same parent was cussing out thier children, yelling at them, and they were smarting back. My dd's and I looked at each other and started laughing.

Point is, kids aren't stupid. They want to see what they can get away with. If no line is drawn, you're asking for trouble. just like the book of Proverbs states, spare the rod, spoil the child.

too many tree huggers in fastpitch softball... I read " take the cell phone away, shut them in from the outside world" and then the cr@p jbennet spewed about ?????? what ever he spewed about. If your child disrespects adults, coaches or any figure of authority it is your duty to take their cell phone and knock their teeth out with it. and then bounce it of the head of the first pansy that says "dont do that". JMHO

Respect is earned, I dont care what age you are. I have never had an issue with my daughter disrespecting a coach/figure of authority. But if she would I believe Ive raised her to see the difference between a person who deserves it and one that doesnt. There are plenty of idiots that deserve little to no respect....No one deserves to have their teeth knocked out! Thats just an insane comment.

There seems to also be a mindset among some parents that they have to be their kids' friend. When my kids were young, they'd even threaten me:
"I'm not going to be your friend any more" and I'd respond "I can live with that."

That pretty much ended that threat. lol.

Like you say, kids will test and find the lines. In my opinion, life is a whole lot easier when you define those lines for them. There will come a time when my kids will be my "friends" (in some manner of the word), but it wont be before they are done needing a parent.

Amen. Too many adults act worse than children. It's hard to give someone respect that doesn't respect you.......that goes for softball and the real world.

Can't believe that out of all these descriptions of ego-crazed coaches and parents out of control, the discussion has focused on one girl who stands up for herself.

Was she smarting off? We don't know unless we were there. IMO, coaches who repeatedly humiliate their players or their teams deserve to be told off -- and deserve to have girls quit on them.

Was her reaction appropriate? Again, we don't know.

But my point is, it might have been.

I too was at the tourney in Elyria a couple of weekends ago, and I saw some *awful* stuff. *I* was about to tell one coach to shut the hayull up, and I didn't know a single soul on his team.

It *IS* a game -- not a test of manhood for middle-aged, pencil-membered nobodies to exercise their fantasies of power and domination on adolescent girls, whether the nobodies in question are coaches, umps or parents.
