Im a 10u coach and just sick of the way my local rec ball league is handled. I would like to start a traveling / tourny team but need some pointers or tips on how to approach it. I already have the support of about 7 parents and players . Any and all info will be helpful. Thanks

First, where are you located, in general. And are you talking for next year or starting in the fall?

Many times a travel team is started with the All-Star team from rec. You become a community travel team and you play in tourneys that are just for community based teams (some are quite competitive) and some of the others that you find are appropriate for the skills of your team.

If you have seven players you are going to need to start NOW and get things going organized so you can be prepared for August try-outs.

Have you considered having those seven kids just tryout for other teams or are you dead-set on forming your own team?

I would say to find an already existing travel program and try to form a team with in it. There are going to be some unexpected challenges, especially with money. PM me with your location and what age group you are planning for next year, and I may be able to give you some suggestions.

Do you have a daughter on this team? How many of these 7 parents really know what travel ball is about? Do they understand the commitment is different?

Best to start out in Rec-Travel Ball and if the first several seasons is successful, the consider moving up to the tournament scene. Emerald Necklace, OGSO, etc provides better than local rec ball competition.
Tournament ball will be more expensive, alot more traveling, and at times lopsided competition.

Im located in Creston , and was thinking next year . Yes i've had 2 of them tryout and make other teams , but picked to stay with the rec team so they all can stay together. And no im not dead set on my own team , its just ive had these 7 players since they started playing at age 5 and everyone ( other coaches or teams ) around here get mad or thinks its funny cause i teach my girls stuff that say or think is stuff they should learn in HS.

My advice is to find an organization around you, don't try to start your own. You are from Creston so there are many organizations to choose from. See about coaching a team within an organization so you will have some people with travel experience to assist you with all that needs to be done, there is more than you could possibly fathom. Remember, you have to find about 5 players to join your 7 and that can be a tough find when the coach and players have no travel experience....experience is a very important aspect as you are about to find out. There is ALOT of time and money invested into this sport and people can be very nutty about it so make sure you have tough skin because you WILL be questioned, accused, and put through the ringer...alot of times by people you would have never expected. It's a tough start, but well worth it if you can stick it out. Don't go at it by yourself though, especially if you haven't experienced travel ball yet. It is a completely different machine with alot of commitment and traveling and most rec parents aren't quite aware of how much commitment and traveling until it is too late. Pm me if you want a list of organizations in your area that you may be able to get a team with....goodluck, you will need it!! :)

Consider where you would hold practices.

And inform the parents that the first year, maybe two, will most likely be "non-successful" due to the lack of Travel experience. (But it will get better.)
