I hadn't seen this before... funny:

http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/records/sbrecrd.htm

4 hits in one inning... Nuts... how does that happen... that would require 37 batters to hit in the same inning... in that game it looks like at least 39 batter made plate appearances...
I could not believe how many girls had hit 2 home runs in the same inning...
Lot of fun numbers...

My favorite stat: Most stolen bases per game...which was 10! That's a lot of stealing, atleast 4 at bats.

While these stats/records are great reading, I highly doubt the accuracy of "ALL SAID STATS". At my DD's school, the principal and coaches daughters have led every category that they have played. Both had season ending batting averages over .500 and didn't even combine for 20 hits all season. Who double checks these scorekeepers?

Converse ... unfortunately, in the area of High School Softball, you are right that the stats are questionable. As opposed to most high school sports, there is no truly official scorekeeper and much of the scoring of the game is either subjective (was that a hit or an error?) or misunderstood (what do you mean getting on by fielder's choice is not a hit?). Additionally, the state stat book is often "incomplete" in that some schools don't send anything in to the state ... I've heard several times here over the years that certain individuals broke the single season or career home run mark yet those stats never found their way into the stat book. The really sad thing can be that that doubt can sometimes diminish the genuine accomplishments of certain individuals. For example, I have no idea whether the person Jen mentioned who stole 10 bases in one game really did it, or if stolen bases were recorded on passed balls or even fielder's choices.

It is what it is ... there will probably never be truly unbiased scorekeepers who are well-educated on the ins and outs of scorekeeping, so we have no choice but to take the records at face value.

Some of the stats must have been fueled with haterade vs gatorade due to the ridiculous amount of runs scored... I suspect on known less experienced programs.

Nonetheless, fantastic list of great players.
It's a great pleasure to see and hear of past accomplished players involved in the next generation of record holders as parents, instructors, coaches, teachers, mentors, and great ambassadors of the game.

Beyond strikeouts and home runs (to a lesser extent due to inside the park HRs on errors) pretty much all HS stats are questionable.

if we started a poll.....

who is your score keeper? how many would be players, helpers, coaches etc.... does any school have classes on scorekeeping?

wonder what the results would be. could be a good discussion.

Even strikeouts and home runs are questionable. If you play in a a conference that had no pitching and tees it up or if you have teams that can't swing a bat it would be hard compare them against other schools/players. Either accept them all or none I would say.

The point is you can verify those stats far better than stats like batting average or ERA.

A point already made but may I add my 2 cents worth, you need to consider the skill level of some of the schools in Ohio. We have schools I am aware of in the Dayton area that have just recently (less than 10 years) began playing fastpitch. Some have not had softball programs while others were still actively involved in a slopitch program that I assume was/is being run without OHSAA sanctioning. You take a few of these teams and throw them up against even a reasonably skilled softball program and unless the coaching staff finally shows some mercy a ballpark may run out of hot dogs before they can get to the 5th inning. The numbers may very well be real!

Records and the reporting of stats are supposed to be the labor of honesty and integrity. Some get so wrapped up they forget what the honorable thing is to do. Some simply do not know how to keep stats. We see posts to that effect on OFC all the time. I am guilty of stat mistakes although if I were to report a record-breaking stat to the State I would make sure I exhaust every option to insure it was indeed worthy of being included into the books. I believe every record I see recorded even when they seem so far outside the box simply because I can invision how it could be true.

I'd rather believe if a record is tainted it's because somebody didn't have the knowledge to know they scored something wrong. Remember "It's not a sin to be stupid but it sure is unhandy." If they are being dishonest on purpose and the OHSAA sees it fit to include in their records than a host of people should be held accountable.

Daboss ... I agree that it's primarily just ignorance of the scorekeeping rules, probably laced with some bias ... e.g., tough plays scored as a hit on offense and error on defense. In comparison to basketball where you either made a basket or didn't, and football where you either gained yards or made a touchdown or you didn't.

The records are fun to look at, but are subjective as to their meaning or value. There are crazy records in all the sports and often they are set by individuals at smaller schools. Take football for example. A running back who sets a touchdown record or yardage record at a D6 school may only get looks from DIII colleges. Do that at the DI level in high school and you are looking at a full ride DI college scholarship. Same can be said for the other sports. Any record is an accomplishment to be proud of, but some records do mean more than others.

One of my local high schools placed 5 players on the local paper's all star team with averages over .400.
They didn't win the district in fact they were third.
When we played them, they must have benched those players cause they forgot to show up.

Stats are stats. Not worth much if the foundation isn't solid.

How can a player have 40 HRS for a career and not be found on the season home runs (minimum 10 for a season)? Or did I overlook the list ?

My favorite record is the single game strike out record, in a 24 inning game she had 55 strike outs and I believe she lost the game. They had to play 2 days in a row to finish the marathon. It was Philo vs Sheridan back in 2010

The pitcher from Philo that set the record was Hayley Flynn. Hayley is a Senior at Eastern Kentucky University. She was just named Ohio Valley Conference "Pitcher of the Week" for last week and is currently ranked 15th nationally with 15 wins this season.

That is an incredible stat. Wish there was video of that game, although I'd certainly need to allot a heck of a lot of time to watch it!
