"See the ball - hit the ball"

At some point that is exactly what they need to do, Hitting coaches correct mechanics, Players practice to produce muscle memory and during a game "see the ball- Hit the ball" is what they need to be thinking about lol...of course this is just IMO ?;D

I agree 100%. My dd hits with her team on Mondays and has a private lesson on Tuesdays. By the time the weekend comes around, there's really only one thing you can affect, and that's reminding them to keep their head on the ball. You just have to trust that when game time rolls around, the work during offseason, and the week leading up were enough. See the ball, hit the ball!!

I agree, that come game time this may be a good philosophy, but if that's all your working on from Monday through Friday, it's going to be a long weekend.... ;)

It's really a trick question, though, isn't it Shayne? What one thing can't be left out of the swing? It's all connected. You start with a foundation, build the mechanics one piece at a time, and if you've built it right it all comes together in an (seemingly) effortless swing that spins the pitcher around like Charlie Brown on the mound.

Not really?? ;) ?Since I have stepped outside the box, and viewed different approaches to hitting, I have come to realize that there are some things hitting instructors feel strongly enough about to teach, but feel that other areas take care of themselves, and very rarely, if at all, are talked about.

I would be willing to bet that most of our DD's, have a swing that was taught to them, by there father's. ?What important areas were never discussed, or overlooked, that could have made a difference in the efectiveness of their swings?

My dd said something to me last night ?at the end of our session that just made me curious and do not know if it is good or bad. She said I love that heavy feeling ?on the bat when I know I hit the ball hard and solid. She said it feels like she is fighting the ball and winning. One thing I should probably mention is that she is hitting softie balls form me at about 25' not sure if a hard ball would feel the same.

What she might be feeling is the bat lag...when starting to connection and that is when the hands pass in front of the back shoulder with the elbow dropping into the slot and the elbow clearing your body and the lead arm elbow leading and pulling or whipping the bat into contact.

In my opinion when they think hands above the plane of the pitch or in sequence of elbow, hand and bat head with the hands above the plane of the pitch you have gotten your point across and they are feeling it.

I did a clinic yesterday and demonstrated using our ball on a rope bat...I had a 16 year old girl hold onto the ball while I held the bat handle as if I were hitting. She held onto the ball with both hands and as I lowered my elbow into the slot and began pulling with the lead arm as I got into bat lag I actually pulled her forward into contact. Then I did it incorrectly by allowing the elbow to get to close to my body and I could not move her and she said she could feel the reduction in power. Using the moement I did it correctly again only this time I said I will rotate my belly button into the direction to opposite field keeping my hands inside the path of the ball and she held onto the rope and that is where she went hanging onto the rope in the direction of the opposite field.

Then I repeated it for up the middle and then to simulate pulling a ball...they got it and then they tried it and the elbow going into slot was understood more clearly and THEY felt how the elbows were working as a unit and why the elbow must be away and clear the body. It can not get to close and it can not be to far away however it does clear your body. The girl holding the ball was about 5' 2'' and 140 lbs. and takes martial arts and it clicked for her.

Hope this helps...

It is a great thing that she can even describe that feeling and pulling and feeling the energy release in the wrist allowing the bat head to feel heavy or solid as she hits the ball.

Most likely if the elbows were not working together she would be describing it differently....in my opinion.

Whatever you are teaching she is understanding well enough to describe it!

Good job!

Do not give the credit to me I am just copying what I learn on OFC and what she/I have learned from her coach Joe A.
