Stupid question??

Most of them either give athletic or academic, not both. Obviously you want to take the one that is worth more. Makes no sense to me why they are starting to do this but they are. I would think you should get both myself if able.

My dd is playing NAIA ball - bulk of his dollars are academic, but she got some cash for softball. Based on what I commonly hear, this is pretty common.

I was hoping that this supposed money tree my parents always talked about when I was growing up would pop up in my backyard just in case !!

Even if they fully fund the 7.2 scholarships, they are usually divided up to many players and few, if any, get a full ride just due to athletics.

Full rides are out there but usually go to pitchers. My daughter has former coach and friend that did get one as a second baseman from a major D1, but are very rare.
Catchers also get some, but as we stress GRADES GRADES GRADES Then they can give you some athletic money and between the two your daughter can do very good for herself.

I agree thay have them but they are usually divided up between many of the players so the "full rides" are few and far between.

Daughter is playing at Valdosta State DII and they give both academic and athletic. Truth is without her grades, she could never have afforded to go there, she is getting more academic aid than softball money. She is a pitcher and they do give pitchers more to bring them in, but the academic money is where the player can help themselves.

Every school seems to be different. DD went D2 and got more for academics, but when they add even a penny for softball it all comes out of their softball budget.

Our pitching coach got a full-ride athletic to OSU, but the advice I hear from the rank and file of collegiate softball players is GRADES, GRADES, GRADES. Can't stress it enough. After all is said and done, virtually none of these ladies will make a living just from softball. There are exceptions to this rule, but very few and very far in-between.

You bring up a great point! I did not know this until my son received a football scholarship to an Ohio DII school. He received an academic scholarship and an athletic scholarship but the head coach told me that the entire amount comes out of his football budget (as soon as any amount is offered on the athletic side).

My DD is class of 2016, and we are just starting to put together her bio's and profiles for softball. She is a talented athlete, and she will pursue a DI softball scholarship. The other side of the coin, she was 1 of 3 freshmen picked to take the PSATS with the upper classmen, and is already getting attention from DI schools, and private colleges for acedemics. For us, acedemics are by far more important than athletics. There is more money available on the acedemic side plain and simple.

I know at least one of the Ohio D2's adopted this policy, called "No Stacking" of academic and athletic money. I know the D2 my DD signed with will still give both but it is not in Ohio.

I think they should give both. No reason not to other than they can.

It makes no difference to you and the student if they take the money form one budget or the other as long as it is not out of your pocket.

The school (NIAI) made an offer to my dd that combined both academic money and athletic money.
That got to about 90% of the tuition bill. Still looking for room and board.
They are paying her about $400/game to attend their school. I hope she takes it seriously and blows them away.

Just a reminder; to sign up for the NFCA ACADEMIC CAMP at Pennsbury if you got the test scores AND the grades.
Someone has to play at Princeton.
