I need some assistance / drills / to teach girls how to slide. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. These are younger girls 10-12 who I have inhereted and they do not know how.

On a hot day like today, the old slip-n-slide method comes to mind. These water play mats are great for giving a young girl confidence in her sliding ability. Once she knows how it feels to slide correctly on the water-enhanced slip-n-slide, she usually can make the transition to the actual field. I've known other coaches to put big pieces of cardboard down on the field and have the girls learn proper slide technique by sliding first on the cardboard.

Also had two people holding a bat and girl run at bat grab a hold and slide. We did it in the early morning when the grass was still wet. make sure they don't wear anything you don't want them to get stained up. I also like the slip-n-slide idea. For those of you without one a tarp will work great too, just add water.

Have them put an arm out on the ground, go around with it touching and do the kick out figure four from that height. If right foot gets tucked use right hand down and go clockwise. Left hand down go counter clockwise...

The slip n slide is a great tool and fun for all ages for sliding and diving. During the winter is a good time to work on sliding too. Get a gym and have players wear socks and sweat pants and practice sliding.

We do this one...just a little differently. Use a bar of uniformed roundness so their hands fit on it properly....Have the hitter choose which foot they want to do the figure four slide with. Have them stand on either leg and then put the other leg behind the knee cap or back of the leg they are standing on while holding the bar so when the player grasps on to the bar they will be able to swing under the bar so their feet will clear the ground.

Now have them lower their self under the bar so when they swing under the bar they are sitting on both butt cheeks equally and their bent leg is under them.

Now have them let go of the bar and find their balance point by keeping their hands and arms high. Slowly have them move their arms backward and they will feel their weight transfer backwards and their feet will begin to lift up ward a little....have them find their balance point that allows them slide evenly and quickly.

Now have them stand on both feet and as they swing under the bar have them place which ever leg they want under them and lower their self to the ground.

Keep repeating until they land on both butt cheeks equally each time.

Next step around so you are standing at their feet and kick their outstretched foot gently to see if it was flexed or firm. Explain to them this is where the ankle can be injured if the knee is kept rigid versus flexed.

Not put your other foot at their shoe and reach out with your hand and say on three we will pop up because our momentum and our knee being flexed will allow this to happen and then have them take the leg under them to help their self up....the pop up slide.

Keep repeating this until they can increase the force of their slide under the bar.

We have done this on gym floors by making sure they have on the cotton gym pants tucked into their socks and not wearing any shoes and never had anyone get hurt doing it.

In between tournaments in Tennessee and South Carolina our team stopped at Georgia Tech University for a softball camp, and the coaches used the slip and slide there also.

At the park I found a flat spot that, went to a little hill. Had them take there shoes off and used moving blankets.

I did that on three different practices and the ones that want to slide do it fairly well.

I did it at 10 and under and 12 and under.

Some girls slide and do not use any knee protection. ?Blood running down the legs, big cherries. :)

I found some that are made by a wet suit company and they are flexable, my dd can run in them. ?They are neoprene and go up over the knee.

She wears the long ones, but they have short ones.

You can pay for sliding mats like college camps use. I like to make my own stuff. If you use two pieces of card board on top of each other in the grass the kids make a game of it. Two large refrigerator boxes knocked down work fine. Lay them on top of each other. The one on top slids easy off the other. We use a broom stick or some other device for the kids to have to slid under. We make a game of it. Indoors I use what Howard stated.

Thanks for all of the great ideas, I appreciate them!

Hopefully they will learn and save themselves from injury, that is my main concern.

sbfamily you are truly a student of Howards you have even picked up on the gadget making ;D ;D I still look at all that stuff like a deer in the headlights and can't even begin to think about making it.

Ya, he gave me a hard time when I made the double bat better than he did. It was just that at work they have a welding shop and my Maint Manager is a softball fan , so he will make anything I give him a picture of. So he welded them together instead of bolting them. He has two other devices I will probably make when I can. The tennis racket mount and Elliots device are both great learning tools. I think both of them should start getting patents on some of this stuff. Did he show you the double bat? You sure can't release your hands early or hit yourself in the back like some kids are doing. . It was his idea! I also have some in the garage that didn't work!

They have something like these that you can get at Dick's...they are usually black but if you find them online you can get a different color...they are a stretchy material and they can stay up on your knee the whole game...not bulky or anything....you may have seen girls w/ them rolled down..the inside is neon like a softball....pitchers aren't supposed to wear them rolled down b/c they "distract" the batter....which i don't get b/c they don't let go at the knees or calf....and the batter should be concentrating on the hip ....BUT!! they are great sliding pads and i haven't talked to anyone who didn't like them

I usually threaten them with having to hold a raw egg in each hand. I haven't had to follow through yet...

Have the girls put on some old clothes and when it rains.... put a bag in the outfield grass and let them have at it. That is how I learned how to slide.
