Teaching Sliding

Try to find an old nylon parachute. Spread it out across the ground and use that to slide across. It worked great for our team when we taught them to slide.

I learned how to slide in my coaches back yard on a "Slip-N-Slide" around 1975. We learned the straight slide, hook slide, and the head first slide. When the coach wasn't looking we tried to do a pop up slide but we about killed ourselves trying. He wasn't very happy about that. We literally had sliding lessons every Saturday after our games that entire season. I found out later that the real reason we had Saturday sliding lessons was because our parents got together every Saturday after the game to grill out and consume adult beverages. The Slip-N-Slide was really nothing more than a babysitter, but everyone on the team did learn how to slide.

Sliding

My answer is a little long so I will just give you a link to a place on my site. The slip and slide is fun, and it helps them get over the fear of throwing themselves onto the ground but there is a breaking system involved that is not replicated using any slippery surface.

I see I forgot to add pictures and I was going to put it into a video too. Maybe tomorrow.

If you're doing this indoors we use a matress from a childrens bed. This cures the kid who is afraid it is going to hurt.

As a side note to this. News Last Night : Parents sued and settled out of court, as a boy got hurt in a little league game sliding into second base. They sued the organization for not teaching them to slide properly. The Lawyers for Little League setted, because it would be cheaper than letting a jury decide the outcome. One of the issues being discussed can they go after the coach next?

My DD can slide when jogging to the base, but still having trouble while running full speed. Seems like she's sliding upright. Any ideas on how to go into the base feet first? I tried holding a bat for her to slide under, but not much success.

We don't have the luxury of the slip and slide so what we do is sprinkle the ground to make it wet and slippery. Then I teach them the bent-leg slide and demonstrate myself. To start off the drill i ask them to raise their arms to the side and let two coaches to stay at each side and hold her arm. Then she will run together with the coaches, she will then slide to the base with support. When she gets confident after several tries, i ask her to slide unassisted and hopefully she does it correctly

Tips:
1. Tell her not to slow done before sliding
2. Make sure to keep her hands high as not to break the fall with her hands
3. Make sure she stays low before the slide
