Interesting article on ways to save money when traveling that we could use going to tournaments: Family shows how to save on road trips

Highlights:
>> Looking out for traffic jams so you don't get stuck in one. Free apps: Waze and INRIX
>> Cheapest gas, free app: Gas Buddy
>> My fav, cheap eats. Skip the chains because they are more expensive. I like to find good local eats for something different and because they are cheaper. Why eat at Cracker Barrel when you are 400 miles away from home when you can eat at one anytime. Unless with the whole team then the chains are better because they will have the room. Web Site: roadfood.com finds the inexpensive places where the locals eat.

HAPPY TRAVELS!

I tried Roadfood.com for my area and it only came up with 1 place, although it is a worthy one - Bruxie - Orange, CA.

Here are the results for Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati - Roadfood.com - Restaurant Search Results. How'd they do?

For Cincinnati area they did great. Listed 8 from which I know 6 and they are very good places. Two I'm not familiar with, Golden Turtle in Lebanon and Dixie Diner in New Lebanon. I had noticed one in Columbus that sounded good for this weekend at the Stingray's. Called Tommy's Diner in downtown. Looks pretty good. Anyone know?

Golden Turtle in Lebanon is delicious...but won't help for real food. It is a sweets shop. Great homemade candy and chocolates...ever in Lebanon stop in. By the train station!

Tommy's is good - lots of people love going there.

If you are staying closer to downtown for Stingrays playing 16U, I would also check out Thurman Cafe (make sure you go at an off time and have a couple of hours to kill - the wait is crazy, and don't even try to take the whole team).

If you're near campus and need something really good, local and relatively cheap and like pizza, check out Adriatico's on 12th (???). Rusty Bucket on Lane Ave. is also good - I think it's a smaller chain, but local.

Mixed for Dayton- Springfield area. Young's Dairy in Yellow Springs is quite an operation and can accomodate large crowds--it is fast food and ice cream and is very popular with young and old, has a goldf driving range, miniature golf, petting zoo, farm animals so there's something for evryone to do. They also have the Jersey Inn right next door and it has full service meals--both very good places.

The Pine Club in Dayton is not inexpensive and only takes cash-- U.S. presidents have eaten there.

Mel-O- Dee in New Carlisle is OK-- I first ate there ( a lot) in 1972 -- has great bread and broasted chicken-- everything is OK. very friendly service.

I would add Giovanni's in Fairborn--absolutely great pizza--thin crusted. Also has home made Italian dishes-- a real Mom and Pop place that can accomodate around 125 diners. They sometimes have Vidalia onions stuffed with Italian sasuage-- very very good--- now I'm getting hungry.

Thanks! Wasn't sure if it was 11th or 12th. You would think after 3.5 years living in that campus that I'd know! I can just drive :)
