This may be a stupid question but I know play get suspended or possibly even canceled due to lighting or rain. Is there a minimum temperature? Can it be too cold to play?

If there is one, I would love to know about it. We played in a fall tournament that if it made it north of 40 degrees at the height of the day, I would be surprised...and those early morning games were probably around 25-30 degrees at the most. We had tents set up with a kerosene heater and a propane heater, and it was still cold!

I believe the magic # for HS ball is 40, but I am not positive. Anything below 50 is just asking for injury in my opinion. This is a sedintary, explosive sport that begs for warm muscles and connecting tissue.

Good question. I wonder if it is team, conference, or state association dependent?

8am first game with an overnight low of 24. Im willing to bet your right about the temp cut off.

Was that the Classics tournament this fall?? That was probably the most miserable tournament I can remember, weather-wise. Otherwise, it was a terrific tournament.

My DD has games scheduled tonight at 7 and 10PM. Forecast is chance of rain, temps in the mid to high 30s.....kinda just like the Classics Tournament!!

Can't change the weather, so what are ya gonna do? Too bad I can't have a Red Cup to keep me warm.

It's 40 degrees and that includes wind chill. I'm not sure how that impacts scrimmages.

I would be surprised if there is an actual temperature limit. Louuuuuise has played many HS games in a snow shower. I think it's more of a field condition issue - too slippery/too soggy/poor visibility...

RESCHEDULE

That's how they get us all to go along with the insanity, we are so starved to be outdoors playing ball (watching our dd play).

My dd HS team had a scrimmage on Tuesday that I managed to make the last hour of. These girls were playing in 38-41 degree weather for at least 2 1/2 hours and for what?? I was chilled to the bone after an hour and I was dressed far warmer than they were.

Did they truely get a good workout? No, they were to busy trying to stay warm. Did they get any good at bats? No, they were trying to avoid those nasty stingers that come when it is that cold. Not to mention all the kids who don't know any better and are using their brand new composites in that weather.

I understand that the coaches want to get an idea of what they have, but lets at least keep it reasonable. An hour and a half is plenty long enough to be out in that kind of cold. JMHO

I think they are going to make a better effort to only play games over 40 degrees due to the bats kids use today.

This is from the OCC conference bylaws and regulations

Section 6 Weather related postponements or cancellations would follow all sporting regulations as established by the OHSAA.

a. Specific guidelines for cold weather for all outdoor spring sports except for ********.
.1. Games/meets shall be postponed if the air temperature at the school in which the game/meet is being held is below 40 degrees at 2:00pm.

2. The official source for the current temperature will be "
www.weather.com"? and the zip code for the host school will be used.

3. It is the responsibility of the host athletic director to determine the temperature by obtaining temperature at "
www.weather.com"?. Cancellations for temperature must be communicated to the visiting school by 2:00P.M. After this time, only mutual agreement between schools will postpone the contest.

While I don't think there is any hard and fast rule, I have always heard that 40 was the "guideline" that AD's and coaches would use to decide whether to postpone high school games. DD's college game postponed for tomorrow though I am not sure if that's due to cold or field conditions. I would be surprised though if anyone who's scheduled a scrimmage "event" for the weekend as a fundraiser would cancel. Let's just hope no one gets hurt in these conditions.

Our AD's rule of thumb is 40 degrees but...38 degrees and sunny with no wind is playable whereas 42 degrees with a 15 mph wind may not be. Otherwise there is no hard, fast league rule.

@The3dm, rescheduling would be great if there were any open dates. I should have clarified that this is in KY, and the season started this past Mon. They are not scrimmage games, so rescheduling a 14 team, 2 day tournament just ain't an option. It is either play through or lose 3+ games off your season.
I mentioned the Classics Tournament this fall. Weather was horrible, however I saw every team playing their rear ends off all the way up to the last pitch of the championship game.
If field conditions are bad, that's another story.

Ah, didn't get that it was a tournament. I guess it is what it is then. My dd HS team is down in KY for a HS tournament on 4/8-9, hope the weather is better then.

We went down for a tournament three years ago when she was a freshman and it was 70+ when we got there, woke up the next morning for games and it was 38 and cloudy. All other teams canceled, but the host team played a DH with us since we drove so far. They took very good care of us, fed us and were very gracious. Don't remember the name of the host school, but despite the horrible weather it was fun.

The most miserable tournament I remember from last fall was in Tipp City. I believe it was the same weekend as the Classics tourney. I've never been so glad to lose a game and get to go home early on Sunday as I was that day.
