Also, just a last note.on this and that'll be all for me.on the softball zone I think.
1. There is a difference in the two situations. I was not coaching a game, I was a p.o'd parent. It happens with parents sometimes. I didn't get a game called against my team, in fact the game had been over for almost 25 minutes. Do I regret my reactions? Certainly, but it's definitely past tense, we seem to be able to get along g fine now and I definitely do nothold any grudges at all.
2. At no time did I call anyone out, no coach name, no team names, no venue locations.
3. If you are coaching young kids I believe you should be held to a higher standard of composure, attitude and good sportsmanship. You're supposed to be teaching the kids about the game, how to play, how to hold emotions in check...one of the Golden rules my DD'S pitching coach has driven home with her, and it's a wonderful thing to see in action. If you know you have a history with that ump, which I agree is not the prime situation but it happens, I would expect that you would try to be on best behavior, because you know you would 't win and argument with an umpire, and is there ever any call that isn't questionable by one side or the other?
That being said, it was nice to have been a part of the forum for a while.
good luck to you all this upcoming season, and most of all have some fun with it!

We were at a game in Portland Oregon the coaches were yelling at each other,a fight broke out the girls on both teams were like can we just play ball? I felt so bad for the girls, but these little troopers all said let's keep playing, so while the coaches beat on each other these girls played ball right around them.

Funny thing. Im sitting here at a girls basketball game. There is a parent behind me from the opposing team screaming at the umpire. "You suck Ray Charles". The Ray Charles thing was funny I am not gonna lie...... But cmon. She's getting louder and more obscene the worst they lose. I can't help but laugh....... The coach is quiet as a mouse though......

Emotional intelligence is the most underrated characteristic in athletics.

noun
noun: emotional intelligence

  • the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.

I'm all for emotional intelligence and for not embarrassing your kid, but sports officials are also earning a paycheck. We should have the right to expect some minimum level of professionalism and competence from them and all too often I see out of shape old men grabbing the spot light from kids with ridiculous calls and completely ignorant interpretations of the rules. It's incredibly frustrating to see girls work hard for months only to see their opportunities taken from them by incompetent officiating. Again, that doesn't excuse vulgar behavior on the part of adults.

About reagansdaddy comments: As an umpire and basketball official, working varsity and small college, I have seen the uninterested, out of shape officials that are only there because they are getting paid and they could not care less about the game. They do not bother to learn the rules and new mechanics, making up their own rules as they go. On the other hand, there are many more well qualified officials who do care and are in shape, the problem is many of them do not want to work certain tournaments, leagues, etc. because of the fan/coach situations that occur, they will only work High school or higher level games.

While I agree there are officials out there who should not be working and have even experienced them myself from the coaching side, without specific examples of calls it is impossible to know if it was a missinterpretation of the rules or not. If the coach thinks the umpire is missapplying or missinterpreting a rule, they need to learn a single word and use it. PROTEST.

I just hope they didn't actually call him an umpire too ....

;)

Question: How can you tell a softball parent apart from regular parents?
Answer: He's the one who refuses to call officials in other sports anything other than "umpire".

You are absolutely correct. There are great officials out there as well. I did not mean to imply that all officials were the way I indicated in my comments, just that some are. You are also right that the lower the level the lower the parent/coach IQ on the game which can lead to more problems for officials. I umpired for many years and found this to be true and eventually did limit the levels that I would do games.
