Are players on a travel team permitted to participate in their team practices after February 20th if they are rostered on a high school team?

I believe the "factual" response is.... players may not particpate with outside team once the school team plays the first contest or scrimmage.

For the life of me I can't understand how the OHSAA gets away with this rule. No one can explain it to me. Except that the administrators make the rules. They are not looking out for the well being of the players. Very few HS teams offer the same training and opportunities that travel teams do. I do agree that travel teams functions should not interfer with HS schedules. But to say they can not get the training to improve is counter-productive.

If I was still in Ohio I would list myself as a trainer for the team - not the coach. That way the HS players would be able to workout with me because I would be a paid instructor...right? I would also prohibit players from participating with their HS summer or fall programs. Lets see how long the HS Admin's liked their best players being excluded from their teams except in season........

below is from the OHSAA rule book
Preview is listed as a practice

Member of an interscholastic softball squad - Any player who has played in a scrimmage, preview, or regular season/tournament game as a substitute or starter.

That is the part that you need to watch out for, they are not officially members of the squad until their first scrimmage or game.

You can practice with your travel team up to the first contest for school ball. A contest is a game or scrimmage against another interscholastic team. You can view this in sections 6.2 and 6.3 in the OHSAA guidelines.

Klump and Twitter are absolutely correct, but as a practical matter of Ohio softball culture most travel ball coaches just yield to the high school program as soon as the players can report for tryouts.

Flarays: sorry but getting your entire travel team together to practice or play scrimmages is not allowed under OSHAA rules, no matter what you call yourself with respect to the travel ball team. The focus in understanding the prohibition is on the players: if a player is a member of an interscholastic squad, she can't work out with her team.

Mark:

A rule could be drafted to provide that no player can participate in a travel team practice on a day where a high school is holding either a practice or a game. Then the travel team could schedule Sunday practices, for example, and anyone who didn't have a HS event could attend her travel team's workout.

The concern with the rule I proposed above is that it would just be too much softball and that the travel team member would be afraid that she will be penalized if she opts to have 1-2 days off per week (most high schools either practice or play five days a week here) instead of participating in her travel ball team's practice.

How do things work to allow TB and HS ball during HS season down there?

Thanks

Carol

It is different down here. There is no rule that excludes players from playing/practicing with their travel teams during the season. Some of the more successful HS coaches try to force the kids into not playing, but ultimately it doesn't work. In the small towns where the HS sports programs are King they get away with it, but in most cases they don't. The sport is year round down here. HS is only 3 1/2 months. Travel coaches have a ton more influence on the players and parents. If a kid plays on a big time team those coaches usually practice on Sundays during the HS season. If the kids don't show they run the risk of not playing for that team. Recently HS teams are trying to run summer and/or fall leagues, but the better travel teams will not allow the kids to miss travel team functions. The committment to these teams is just too much. I am sure the committment is the same in Ohio. The top teams need the time together, if they practice together. Too much money and too much exposure is at stake.

What if several members of a team or the entire team attended a clinic (ie Crystal Bustos hitting clinic) would this be a violation?

Wow, same ol **** just a different day.

Flayrays- So your your telling me that at our high school where the girls practice 3 hours a day Monday through Saturday plus keep there grades up is not enough for you and your super duper travel team? When your tb coach thinks he is more important than playing for your school team then I think the TB coaches ego is completely out of control and as a parent I would take control of things quickly.
