Ump out of line?

WOW! We have seen a lot of this going on as well this year... Umps high fiving between innings or giving instructions to girls how to play. Totally wrong in my eyes...
But the one that takes the cake from an umpire was a few years back at a very well run and well respected tournament that draws some big teams every year. It was hot and dusty and the field needed to be sprayed down.. The umpire turns to our team which was 14u at the time and says "Hey ladies how about a wet t-shirt contest"
We were in total shock! We reported this to the TD and he made the ump aplogize. The ump went on umpiring for the rest of the tournament and gave our team the silent treatment when we would ask for the count or how many outs.. After the tournament we reported him again as well and sent letters to state director. Nothing happened! He is still out there... We just had him ump a few games for us a couple of weekends ago. He still tries to say little things to our girls every now and again.. But with the girls being 18u and bigger than him haha, he keeps most of his comments to himself. I just hate the fact that he is still out there umpiring with these young girls... Who knows what he is capable of....

I also thought that there wasn't a "one second" rule ,but to no avail. The runner on third do return to her base, but was still called out.The bad part was ,that it was in the bottom of the sixth with a 1 to 1 tie and two outs and his bad call made that the third out.I asked for an appeal from the base ump,but he said it wasn't his call!!!UGHHH!!!

Unfortunately any time you make a comment to the ump, you will notice a change in the strike zone. Can't believe such unprofessional behavior, but as I say anytime you deal with humans, you never know what you are going to get.

I Know Tons of Umps from 25 Yrs Plus on the Mens Slo-Pitch Circuit. And a surprising number of them do Girls fast pitch as well. By and Large they are fair , very Fair. Some are Good , some Great, Some terrible. But I dont think they will out and out Cheat you ... but human nature may allow that Strike Zone to be Solidified (and perhaps NOT To your liking).
the BEST Bet . And its HARD...is to Bite your Tongue. And not toss out the Comment. MOST of us fail in that area. One thing I have noticed is a LOT of Umpires with Thin Skin... They also have responsibility here to Ignore the "comment" and not toss gas on the Fire. Too many Coaches and even Parents are getting tossed for No Good Reason. If the Fan or Coach isnt "ABUSIVE" or Vulger... Deal with it Blue. You demean yourself aND your colleagues , with a quick fuse.

I was at that game and it was pretty good game and I seen the girl hit the ball and that was not down the line that was a shot to left field and the fence said 301 and she hit the ball 290 on the fly for a 14u that was very impressive and the ump came down the line and gave her a high five but everybody seems to fail to see after the game the ump the high fived one of the players from the team that won and that was not the team the girl hit the ball nobody complained about that did they and I thought he called a pretty good game behind the plate he might of missed a call at the plate but he did a good job. That shows that the person who started this post does not understand the game and the respect of player and umpire on the field I think this was not out of line.

I think buckeye(not to but in) the point is that he stopped the game to do it. Both my DDs know a few umps, and talk to them between games. During the game they are a judge, and need to stay impartial. My youngest is a catcher, oldest is a pitcher, they know a couple and how they even call their strike zone. They will joke with them when they get there, and while they are putting on gear. Once the game starts it is supposed to be about the business as hand. They will come up after games and tell my oldest something like you were missing your curve by a bit, or you weren’t following through. They show that is about making the girls better, and teaching them. Just not during the game they are to call it down the middle and not interfere, or stand out.

In response to buckeyesoftball25,there is nothing wrong with an umpire congratulating a player for a nice play, but calling time to do it is unprofessional. Congratulating a player after the game is a different situation altogether. If you were at the game, you saw that one of our players hit a triple and the ump didn't call time to high-5 her. speigleme understood the point I was trying to make. Maybe your understanding of the role of the umpires is different, but they are supposed to show that they are impartial DURING the game.

Agreed !!! Good Post !

...as a player Umpires have done that on Occasion and it means a lot to you. But during the Game...?? One funny story I remember was in Youngstown about a dozon Years a go I was Playing , At BAt and the Catcher was very Loud and Abrasive. As a Pitch was coming in I was about to swing when the Catcher Screams "POP" (as in You gonna Pop it up) Apparently As I started my swing I was Yelling back at Him " POP That !! " And lined it thru the RC Field gap... after hitting 3B at the Plays End the UMP calls Time out ...Trots down the 3rd base line looks at me and says "POP That !! ...Thats was Great !!! Really Great " and runs back Laughing his head off... The Catcher was none to Happy... But a Very Funny story about Trash Talk and Umpire Reactions to Play on the Field. Was also Outta Character for me..but the Catchers Abrasiveness was waring on me. Ha ha ha... It SHUT Him up though !!
