Use of EP in NSA

Can the EP in NSA be used on defense without being subbed in, similar to the DP in ASA? Can they move between defensive positions like a DP can, and have it considered a position change, not a substitution?

Example:

1. player 1 listed as EP in lineup and does not start the game defensively.
2. In third inning player 1 enters (not a substitution) for player 2 who is playing left field. Player 1 and player 2 keep their same positions in the batting order.
3.In the fourth inning player 1 moves to center (for player 3) and player 2 returns to left field. Players 1, 2, 3 maintain their same positions in the batting order.

I was discussing this with another coach yesterday and need some clarification.

My understanding is that as long as the batting order does not change, and the girls are in the original lineup, that they can change defensive positions freely.

Agree except with the EP you're batting either 10 or 11 depending on the tournament rules. With the DP you're still batting only 9.

Agree with Iceblack. It is free defensive substitution as long as batting order doesn't change. Can have 11 in NSA batting order. Only issue is if you only have 11 and one gets hurt you take an out each time that player comes up. Saw that several times this weekend. Only stipulation in tournament is if pitcher or catcher changes umpire and opposing team needs to be notified due to courtesy runner rules if allowed.

It's been a few years since I worked NSA softball...but my NSA rule book is still right here on the computer stand!

The EP (or EP's, since you may use one or two) can play defense at anytime and it is not regarded as a substitution. Essentially, you have either 10 or 11 batter's in the line-up and any combination of 9 of them may play in the field at any time.

NSA also uses the DH, and that rule is different. If the DH ever plays defense, or the DH is substitued for by the player she is batting for, then the role of the DH is terminated for the remainder of the game.

The NSA rule book says that any nine may play defense. I just wanted to make sure that when they did, it did not count as a substitution. Thanks again for the help.
