Let?s see Hawaii was admitted to the Union in 1959, when Pearl H arbor was attacked it was U.S. territory. With Japan?s expansion in the south pacific and its attack on our pacific fleet we were pulled into war w/ Japan. So why Germany, Hitler could not invade us, he was fighting on too may fronts. The German subs were out hunting in the shipping lanes in the Atlantic trying to stop supplies to England and even thou they did declare war on us what were they really going to do? FR

Hey FR :) ~ great question.

The short answer to the "Why Germany?" question is the Tripartite Treaty.

It was a sort of thug's deal to protect each other---if any of the Axis countries (Germany, Italy and Japan)was in a war, then the other 2 promised to declare war against whoever the 3rd was fighting.

So the sequence went:
1. Japan attacks Pearl Harbor and declares war against the United States
2. We declare war on Japan
3. Germany and Italy declare war on United States

I really don't know if Germany and Italy were thrilled with Japan starting a war with the U.S., when---like you said---they already had their hands full and in all likelihood would have taken England if we hadn't come into the war when we finally did.

This concludes my History Channel post. ;)
