What Makes a Great Coach ?

one thing I think makes a great coach is someone who can adapt to players he/she has and not try to force his/her style of play if they don't have the talent it takes.

Brandelee and Coop,

I haven't told too many people about this (well, I guess I have now)l I guess it took this topic to tell this story, but I have a strong suspicion that this is not the only story there is to tell. There are many others with their own, but then, that is a good thing.

Johnnies, thanks for sharing!

You got yourself some awesome roots. I'm positive all 3 men are proud of you and the coaching skills you bring to your young ladies and this great game.

Johnnies,

What an awesome outcome that took place. That's what coaching should be all about. It's not done to see what "I" can get out of it. Or, look what "I" have done with this team since I have been here. It's going home after a long practice (that you dragged yourself to after working all day). Not sitting down to eat till the bottom of the eighth inning of the Tribe game with a smile on your face knowing that at practice you had some laughs, smiles, cracked some jokes, picked on someone in a good way and all came together for two hours and forgot about the rest of the world around us. Those kids had a blast, learned, had fun, probably ran some laps, but most of all, spent time doing what they enjoyed.

First and foremost I was not talking about me, in fact there is probably no such thing as a "GREAT COACH", butmany good and outstanding coaches. To respond to whether i am a great coach, the answer is no. I never give myself any kind of rating as it is not about me. I would prefer my players and their parents make that decision for themelves. I have great relationships with my players and their families both current and past players. As long as the girls have fun and enjoy learning, thats all that matters. I do this for the enjoyment of being aound the game and the kids. my daughter stopped playing ball before last season and I still dedicate my time to every girl in our organization. Am I great, nope. But i will defintely take responsibilty when I make a mistake on the field and I make plenty of them!

Agoch,
I have a feeling that the you may have answered that question wrong... I am sure that there are many girls out there who do consider you a great coach.
Keep it up, you are making a difference. We need more parents out there whose daughters are done playing to stick around. I have been blessed to have quite a few in our organization who are still here long after their DD's are done playing.

Johnnies,

What a great story. I don't personally know you, but you are ok in my book even if you are a tribe fan. lol

I agree w/ all the things that are needed to be a good coach. Those should be a given. I feel the most important is the coach's heart - how he or she deals w/ multitude of variables that come w/ being a coach. Being able to give each player a positive experience that helps them develope into a successful adult. I was given this by my first coach. He had incredible patience w/ a player that literally struckout every at bat until the last game, when I got my first hit. Because of the way he continued to work w/ me all season, never being negative, gave me the desire to become the same kind of coach. I measure my success as a coach by how many former players come up and speak w/ me after they have played w/ us. That feeling is priceless! Thanks to Ron Grawe for being that kind of coach! I hope I can come close to being the kind of coach he was.

Johnnies, that explains it. Behind all great coaches are more great coaches!!

But, I cry while watching ER!! Please try and refrain from that in the future!! LOL
