When is enough, really enough!

I coach a JV team in SW Ohio. Last week we traveled to an away game only to find out that the other team only had 8 players. The game was forfeited but we decided to go ahead and play. The other coach suggested that I bat my whole lineup. I had 13 girls. I did bat all 13 and I also substituted freely in the field. I played a pitcher who had never pitched in a game.

Things didn't go so well for us and we ended up losing 15-14. We were clearly the better team but because we played everyone and substituted so freely, the game slipped away. Any unknowing bystander would have thought our opponent had won the World Series. The players and coaches were bragging that they had beaten us with 8 players.

Well, we played again this week. I had our AD call the other school to ask if they were going to have enough players. We were told they had plenty. When they arrived they again had only 8 players. I held my composure and I started the same pitcher that I had before. Walk after walk and after a half inning the score was 10-0 for the other team. Again, we heard taunts of being a bad team.

At this point, I turned loose the dogs. We hit the ball better than ever. After 1 inning the score was 17-10. After 2 innings it was 23-10 and after 3 innings the score was 31-10 in our favor. The other team decided to quit at that point. Was I wrong for running up the score?

I think you got your point across. Maybe the other coach should teach his team some sportsmanship so they would not need to be embarassed to learn it.

You go Gregg! They just showed bad taste and you had every right to shut them up.

People treat you how you treat them. I wonder if their coaches had been classy the first game if you would have been inclined to put it on them like that. I really don't like running up the score but there are times some people and programs that have a beat down coming.

I have read quite a few of your threads in the past and always found you to be upfront, I would have probably done the same thing as you.

If it matters I don't think any differently of you then I had before and as I had said before I think highly of you as a poster.

My question would be - WHY DID YOU EVEN LET THEM GET THAT CLOSE IN THE FIRST GAME ??

I agree with your actions. They got what they deserved,

Lets get some perspective....it's a JV game. Shouldn't you just be glad that your kids are getting some work in? Ignore idiots and don't show your kids that you can give it to them the same way that they dished it out. I see no lesson learned there.
Again, its just a JV game. Way to go on your huge win.

without being there for game one it's hard to say what I'd do for game 2.... beings kids were involved my thoughts are even more trying due to being a competitor that doesn't want to loose at even flipping coins... 10 years ago I would have laid the smack down. NOT that I'm old, but clearly thinking IMO much better about the whole picture... I would have probably fallen back on being a mentor to the young ladies first and how to be a true sportsman as a leader and only whooped up on them enough to get a lead for the win.

While I understand Viper22's question above I'm guessing you plaid the first game with intentions of getting the 13 girls some playing time and experience and since it was a forfeit you didn't care much about the outcome since it didn't matter.

I think you had a good reason especially after the fact they started whooping it up fter the first inning of 2nd game.

Was any green beans thrown in anger?

Sounds like that program has some serious problems. AD should have cancelled the first game if they didn't have enough players before you go there. As is, you having travelled there, had a joint practice so that your players and their players could get some work in. The second time was b.s. as well. AD shouldn't have made the representation about the number of players if he/she didn't know. I think you made your point about the need for some manners. You started the same girl from the first time who is not a regular pitcher and then after allowing ten runs presumably moved back to your regular lineup. I wouldn't let it bother you.

Nope , you gave the other team an inch , and they tried to take a mile. I'd done the same. Maybe not even cut them any slack at all after being disingenious about the 2nd game. I certainly would lose any sleep over it. MD

Why, exactly, do you say "It's just a jv game"? Don't the jv girls work just as hard. They usually get the shaft when it comes to field, uniforms, extra jackets, hoodies etc. The games are just as important to them as the varsity girls.

Edgeoo: I agree with everything that you did. The only thing that I might've done different was pull the whole team together and ask them this: Do you guys want to continue to play everybody (substituting freely, with, I would assume many girls out of position) and let these girls keep talking smack? (Which would've been fine if that's what they wanted.) Or, do you want to shut them up? I'd vote for shut them up, but that's just me.

Edgeoo...I think I would have had the same response. When the other coach showed his true colors for the second time, all bets are off! Good job.

Benbudda..What do you have against people with girls NOT on a varsity team? You got ****y about people posting middle school scores, now "it's just JV"? Sorry I only have dd in the 6th grade. Us OFCers are proud of our kids not matter what level they are playing. Oh yeah MY SON'S T-BALL GAME GOT RAINED OUT...will post the score next week just for you!!:yahoo:

I have to say that I am really get tired of hearing people say, it is just a JV game. My daughter plays JV and they get very little respect. I know that my daughter works VERY hard at practice and putting in many extra hours at home and many hours with her hitting coach. To her it is not JUST a JV game.

Gregg, I know you are a class act, as your SD teams are, so I am sure you handled it just fine:)

Gregg, having met you out on the TB circuit I think your a pretty fair guy. I would have let the ladies take it to them also. Then again I would have whooped them the first time:) p.s. some JV teams are pretty good:)

When you play them again next season (if they have the same knucklehead coach) Id put it to them again, just as a friendly reminder.

For those parents, coaches, and players to act that way, under those conditions, is truely sad.

Gregg. I know you are a good coach and great guy. It is what it is. You did the right thing. In school ball JV or Varsity, it is about winning and team/community support. It builds character at every level. Congrats on your victory.
