In fall ball, my dd's school coach asked me if I wanted to call dd's pitches. I said, "Nope, you're the coach. You do it." I've never had the arrogance to think I could do that better than the coaches my dd's had. Besides, I really think the pitcher and catcher should be running their own game.

We had a pitcher on my daughter's college team whose dad would use certain verbal signals to call her pitches. We figured it out, but we didn't say anything. Several things happened.

The catcher struggled with pitches going where she didn't expect, lots of walks, lots of hit by pitch, several home runs, a high ERA, the team didn't play as well behind her, and she quit the team.

It is really tough on a catcher when she is expecting a certain pitch, and it isn't even close. I felt so sorry for the catcher as she became a ball target trying to figure out where the pitches would go. I guess she doesn't have to worry now.

What a mess. How was it the coach couldn't see this and put a stop to it?

What an IDIOT!!!!!!!! These parents never learn. I just don't get it. I love HS ball because I get to sit back and enjoy the game. Travel ball I'm asked to call pitches, and I wish they'd come up with a different set up so I could do the same there too. I wonder if these clingy, won't cut the cord, won't go away parents ever read these posts and realize we're talking about them? A catcher expecting to catch a pitch that she doesn't know's coming........priceless! Way to go dad, lets make the pitcher, catcher, and yourself look like fools. LOL!

JMO, dad can call the pitches as the "Coach", otherwise go to left field pull up a chair and shut up! However, if dad (coach) feels his dd is the shiznick and team cant win with out her, then get out of coaching...
Dad, if not the coach of an "A" classified team, should never be calling pitches!
Dad, if the coach of an "A classified team" and doing well calling the pithces, then call them all!!!
Dad, if the coach of an "A classified team" and team isn't doing well, then get off the bucket and join your wife in the chair beside her.

I'm a firm believer in a coach calling pitches. The girls have enough to worry about, especially the pitcher, that they shouldn't need to try and read a coach's mind and make the right call. I hate seeing a girl getting yelled at because either the catcher or pitcher executed a called pitch and the batter took it for a ride. The "you should have known better" attitude is simply appalling to me.

**** it up and accept some responsibility. Coach; call the game you want. Don't put it on the shoulders of the kids or a parent unless you put the parent on the staff. I don't agree with the way some other coaches call games but I don't say anything. Everyone is different and that alone can confuse a batter. And another thing; why do coaches want a girl to learn all the different pitches and practice them only to get in a game and get stuck on calling a fastball all the time? Come on coach, use all the weapons that are working and call a full game. If you won't, don't blame the kids like it's solely their fault.

I hate seeing a coach dodge responsibility and punish kids because they don't play out the game as the coach envisioned it.

Coaches should call pitches. I can't imagine any situation where a dad would call the pitches unless he is one of the coaches. NEVER should pitches be called outside of the fences. I can't imagine a coach allowing this to happen or even wanting a dad to call the pitches. It sounds like to me that this is a coach trying to appease a father. I would think that the coach would garner more respect if he/she had complete control over their team.

I have called pitches in both baseball and softball and in my opinion if you have a good catcher they are far better equipped to call the game. The key is they must be properly coached and know what the game plan is going in. The have a much better viewpoint on they key points to determine the batter's weakness. They have to know thier pitcher well and get some feedback from the coaches

Had a cool thing happen yest. team up 8-1, bottom of 7...they take the senior catcher out and put the freshman (next years varsity catcher) and had the senior call pitches. Very cool experience for both!
