Honestly this has to be the most insane stuff I have read on a message board in some time.

But you can not make this type of stuff up.

So when I hear stuff like this I like to look at it from another angle. Lets assume that the events as they have been perceived by Mike are 100% accurate. Lets also assume the screaming happened. Can we all agree that this seems insane. And when I see something insane I question what I am actually seeing.

What if the coach and players are all in on this? And it is something they do as an intimidation tool against other teams. I am not sure I follow how this would be intimidating but lets just assume it happens and the coach is not nutz. Maybe this is an inside joke on the team that when someone has a big hit or timely hit but not a HR the coach goes out and dresses them down. This is the only possible thing that makes sense to me assuming the events are happening as stated.

I have a really hard time believing a coach would think a HR can be commanded. And I doubt very much teenage girls would have any patience with this coach.

My only question is if Mike's DD is on this team? And if yes you might want to ask your daughter what is going on and why. I can not seeing any set on data that matches the events except that it is a hoax done by the team.

I didn't figure this sort of thing could or would be defended by anyone.

So you're saying the proper punishment for a missed sign is to berate a player on 2nd base in the middle of a game?

Noted.

Reading comprehension is not one of your skills. Story telling might be in your future. I clearly stated that you have no idea what the history is. In my posts, there was not one reference where I said berating a player was acceptable. However, I'll wait now for you to point out those words since you obviously have made that accusation toward me.

Spartansd, our Lasers Green Team actually experienced this in a game at ASA / USA Nats in Chattanooga when we were 11U. We were playing the Birmingham Vipers 00 in pool play and they were leading like 3 or 4 to 0. His batter swung and missed, he called time and met with her near the 3B Coaches box. He started yelling at her on how she sucked and was one of the worst players he had ever coached. I, as well as my players and parents were stunned. Later on film we caught that he gave his player a quick wink and smile before she went back to the batters box. It threw us off for an in ing for sure...as we lost 7-2.

How about some common sense for this thread. For a coach to have done this, he would have to have a practice where he orders his players to hit home runs on demand. If this seems rational to all of you, then he'd also demand triples, doubles and singles on demand. He would practice short gaming everyone. His pitchers, to follow this logic would be ordered to pitch perfect games each time out. He'd be the talk of the town, state, and country as the greatest coach ever.

Some of you have coached for a long time. This is my 30 year of HS. This is absolutely a made up scenario.

Unfortunately, your reading comprehension is skewed to what you believe you're reading. No one is saying the coach was in the right for berating a player for not hitting a HR - the forum is saying you are wrong for writing such a BS story.

Carry on.

Yeah.

"The coach is justified" must be code for "this guy shouldn't have screamed at the kid."

TB coach last summer told our catcher in advance to prepare for a good chewing on a time out! He did not like the balls and strikes, so he screamed at the catcher for not framing better in an attempt to make blue feel bad for the catcher. It actually seemed to work and she came in grinning afterwards. Everyone was given the heads up in advance so he only looked like an idiot to the other team so all was good!

Oh, I see. You were posting in a different language.

Translate the words "the coach is justified" into English so this bumpkin can understand what you mean.

Thanks.

I couldn't ever do that. Seems kinda bush league to me... But things that I think are alright (stealing signs, etc), could seem bush to others...

My kid doesn't play for this guy, she plays for the guy who thinks telling the parents of his players that he is overtly trying to cheat is better than just admitting that he doesn't know the rules.

I was told, on this thread, that a 10u coach would tell the teacher on me if my kid played for him and I dared to mention that he's never read a rule book.

Can we all stop trying to play stupid games and play/coach the game in the spirit that it is designed. Have respect for the game, please.

I am all for having some fun, alittle bait and switch with in the proper etiqute/rules of the game, but then you start being absurd. Obviously these are extreme examples, but they do happen.

Teach the kids how to take advantage of true situations, like knowing the third strike drop rule correctly, or coaches truly understanding the DP/Flex, straight steals on 2 out full counts, tagging on long foul balls, assuming slide until coaches says up, as a batter watching the base runners signs also, on and on.....

I bet more than half of these coaches that are trying so hard to be cute, can't instruct any real part of the mental chess match and instead work on short cutting the game.

Don't cheat the game guys/gals!

P.S. I don't know this thread's scenario first hand, if taken at face value its nuts, and I would never berate a player like as described.

Your mind is so twisted. You havn't changed a bit since coaching for the Merchants. You are still a legend in your own mind.

That's right.

Expecting a guy who coaches softball to have a basic understanding of the rules makes me feel as though I'm a legend.

Twisted, too.

I nearly forgot twisted.

1) Do coaches get upset with players who miss or ignore signs ... yes
2) Do some of those coaches who get upset with players yell at them on the field ... yes
3) Should coaches yell at youth players on the field ... no
4) Should coaches have a conversation with players who miss or ignore signs ... yes
5) Should youth players who continually miss or ignore signs be disciplined (e.g., lose playing time) ... yes ... a youth coach is there to teach his or her players ... children need to learn that when a coach/parent/boss asks them to do something for the team/family/company that isn't harmful to themselves or others, that they need to do it whether they agree with it or not
6) Is there any softball coach in America who has a HR sign and who would be upset with a player who only got a 2B ... no ... if you're trying to make a point or ask a theoretical question about something, I'd recommend using a more realistic example in the future ... if you were really told this story and believed it, I have some land in Florida ...

I have seen coaches even pull a kid being lazy on plays in the middle of an inning. My DD played three spots in two innings One time when such example happened. But not berate them on the field. There is a time and place for discussions and those discussions are expected when due, regardless of what Mom or Dad think.

So if it is true, are there specific signs for a single, double, or triple? Wouldn't it be smart of the coach to just give all kids the HR sign?

"Once my coach gave me the home run sign," said no softball player, ever, lol!

None who you personally know and none who JB has ever made a wrist band for. That's definitive proof of,,, something.
