This is very tough for a coach and for an organization.. I struggled with it this week and I am still struggling as we speak (type..lol) We had a little scrimmage the other nite with about 23 of the girls I liked at try-outs to get a feel for what they could do between the chalk. I believe you can only see so much in a try-out...After it was done I told all the ladies I would let them know by the end of the nite who I was going to take on my team..(My org is a little differant from some others... 99.9% to 100% of the girls that come to our try-outs make a team.)This has been the philosiphy from the start. The problem I had was after the scrimmage I was up till midnite picking players and trying to get the right fit for the team. I wanted to take all 23 because they took a Tuesday nite out of there summer (what is left of it ) to come to a scrimmage and sweat there butts off...I hope I make the right decisions and hope ALL ladies who go to try-outs get a cahnce to play next summer.....It is all for the girls...Thanks

(Sorry iceEd, I'm about to go waaaay over 200)

Hey Statman---very heavy topic---but an important one.

I'm sure my response will be more telling more about me than I would like, but I think there are probably a few folks out there who feel the same.

I don't know if any adult wants to admit to it, but I've sometimes felt that when my dd competes for a position on a team, it takes me back to my grade school days.

It gets right down to feelings of acceptance, recognition, and self-worth. When we formed teams for kickball at recess---we all wanted to be on the team with the "cool kids". When we lined up in gym class to pick teams for dodge ball---no one wanted to be the last one chosen.

If we are honest with ourselves---our feelings get hurt for our child if we think she may have been rejected or slighted or overlooked (or maybe it's just me). We think "my dd was just as good as that other girl, why wasn't she chosen?"---it's just human nature.

But waiting and disappointment are also natural parts of life---very few of us go through life getting immediate answers and every thing we ever wanted (whether it's getting on a particular softball team, a cute kid we wanted to ask us to the dance  lol, a job with company we want to work for, etc.).

As cliche as it is, that old saying still holds true---"what does not kill us, only makes us stronger". It's absolutely true---after a disappointment/rejection and we wake up the next morning and are surprised we are still alive---it toughens you up. You learn that you are able to endure more than you thought---you can shrug off a slight (real or imagined), and think "huh, well that's their loss if they didn't choose me, and it will be someone else's gain", then go out and try all over again with determination.

Well Stats, I've gassed on enuff about my insecurities for now, but I just thought you made a very insightful observation.

OK, So I quoted the long winded response! :lmao: But this is very well put!
Although, IMOP Some tryouts see 20 to up around 30 or more, girls show up. I am not a coach but lets just put it as easy as I can sum. There is no way any one coach can call that many girls after a tryout.
Our standard is that if you want the girls you tell them before they leave.
We actually had a "Moderator" that did an excellant job! He approached the Coaches before they tryout was over. Got their notes on the girls they were interrested in. He then aproached the girls before they left. I think he missed two that escaped to fast but those were called right as soon as we got home.
A conference was called with all parents and they were told they would get a call within 24 hours if their DD made the team. Several were called & asked to come back to the second one to give them a second chance because the Coaches felt the girls didnt do well due to nerves. They see potential, but maybe the child was nervous, maybe even sick to their stomach. You never know!

On another note:
My DD's first tryouts. She went to the same organization 3 times. They didnt even look at her. No phone calls, nothing.
We waited & waited. But hey, it is part of life as katjoebenmom explains.

We posted here on OFC looking for a team & got a private tryout for 12U Heverly. He wanted her but had the wrong phone number for us. :lmao:Can we say coach panic? We laugh about it now. But that team she tried to get on 2 years ago asked our DD and my DH both to bring her to his team after this season. My DH then told him I had her there 3 times for tryouts. The coach looked stunned.
Kids can get looked over due to nerves, bad day, or something just off. Then turn out to be a pretty darn good player. Try invites back at least if you see potential.

From what I'm hearing there are a lot of kids waiting for that call. Many of them are very good ball players!! Alot of this is due to the fact that there has been a lot of movement on teams. Teams disbanding, splitting up, etc.... Alot of roster are going to have whole new looks for 2009.
We had to pick up 6 new players! It is going to be a fun year though. We are excited & so are the girls. :yahoo:They are asking when are we going to practice? HAHA Now THAT is a new one!

I'll jump in, [stupid probably!] 1st. not getting a call immediately from the magic is not an indicator you were 2nd choice. Our coaches were asked to be diligent, this may hurt us with some though, who think of it that way. Our coaches have lives and commitments, one coach is even coaching in college PLUS full time job, he's really busting butt to do a great job with Magic.

The "NO" call stinks for me, I pray for an answering machine to be honest. We have kicked around calling, email, letter mail, nothing works well, there is always someone missed, and it hurts.

well, now that the tryout season is entering it's old age now, hopefully everyone out there can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they did stick that team they wanted....for those that are still "waiting" the statman (and others) feel your pain.....for those that dont get a call, dont let it deter you from playing softball....there's nothing better than to oppose that team and get a game winning hit (or strike out with bases loaded...j/k)
I'm almost glad school is upon us...now i can concentrate on volleyball, lesson plans and the potential murdering of high school boys who look at my DD

DD will be a freshman this year, and I will pass on the plan to you that I have been formulating for this day:

Make it look like an accident...

Several years ago, Coop and I were sitting in our folding chairs behind the backstop of a dusty field, which was being whipped by the wind. Our mouths were full of the dust that was being blown off the infield.

We came upon an idea - what if that dust was flavored? Then the fans could get some enjoyment from being pummelled by the wind! Flavor combinations, such as peppermint, mocha, bubblegum, and strawberry were suggested. Tournaments could advertise not only their game guarantees, but the flavor of their field dressing. The possibilities were endless - and still are.

Look for the website any day now - Diamond Dust Delicacies.

If you have to use diamond dry or top coating for your fields, why not make it a flavor!

I believe it was heat and dehydration.......we would never have alcohol at a game.

I still think RANCH would be the most popular.

But seriously Sideliner, did you ever see Fried Green Tomatoes......I'm telling it could work.

Sometimes the best ideas start with 80's flashbacks!! ;&

Awesome!!! Just got a mental image of Cheech and Chong behind the backstop, lol. :D

"Dude---this dust would be, like totally gnarly if it tasted like peppermint, maaaan." (Soundtrack in the background is War's "Lowrider") ;)

So, which is Cheech, and which is Chong???
