Ump question

The only thing I'll add to this is that I wouldn't want my kid saying "Are you friggin kidding me" out load to anyone. Umpire or not. She can think what ever she wants but in this case obviously it was said load enough for people to hear. I'd worry about parenting my childs behavior and a little less whether the umpire had the right to embarrass her in public. I'd have no problem with an umpire letting my dd know her behavior was unacceptable, Then we'd go home and I'd give it to her also. Her knowing this is probably why I haven't had to deal with issue's like this. JMHO

Some of the language at 16u and above on the field and the jaw jacking, etc.... is sometime worse than "cussing like a sailor".

Like the girl on second saying before the pitch, " Ump, the SS is in my way ( as the SS is standing in baseline).

I say, "So. She is allowed to be there until you get there".

Then it is the SS saying something back to the runner or the runner saying something to the SS. Or both. Some of your Darling Daughters have the foulest mouths on the field of play. Not all.. but some.

Usually it begins at 16u... Haven't heard much at 14u yet... just a couple so far.

Two separate points: As a player and a coach, I always respected umpires who would actually explain situations/points to myself, teammates, and players. Zero tolerance for cursing. But now I see way too many messianic figures wearing blue, white, and red....Remember, you are being paid to make correct calls and to know the rules, not to get in a contest with 16 year-olds. If thier parent has failed to explain cursing is inappropriate, then I doubt if you can correct the situation with a public verbal beatdown.
Quaker and Bret-had an umpire threaten to toss an older gent last year who loves to scout pitchers. His sin-he had two seperate video cameras w/a laptop he was using to see the girls throw and chart the pitchs in the strike zone. Ump said he was just there to "...show him up....how dare you disrespect me...take it down or I WILL HAVE YOU ARRESTED..." This is before the game had even started. I do not personally know this man, he had a daughter who played for Mich. in the '80's I would guess, and I have seen him before at games, and found him to a great fan of the game and a gentleman. Now I suppose under the rule you quoted, the umpire had the right to bar the cameras. But I must say I cannot convey in a public forum my personal opinion of the umpire in question, and I would be all for eliminating this rule.

I didn't know that she said "friggin" because I didn't hear it! It wasn't until I posted this that I found that out and she did get reprimanded for that and more!! My children are guilty until proven innocent, and I NEVER said that she was an innocent in all of this! As I have stated on this post and in pm's since....I will back any umpire over my child at anytime. It was NOT the messege he delivered that I objected to, it was HOW he delivered it!

Obviously, over the years I've seen the camera people and I am fine with it. Only once did I have a camera person stop taking pictures and that is when flashes was going off in a night game distracting the batter... and odd thing about it... it was his daughter.

Camera, video and things like that has never bothered me personally... as there is too much other stuff to worry about anyway.

Some umpires have problems... many bring it upon themselves worrying ABOUT EVERYTHING versus what they are suppose to do.... but the one thing I don't partake in from a spectator is foul language around the girls. Unexcusable and definately unacceptable in my book. I will not tolerate it. Ever.

Way back on the first page of this thread I said something about having the right temperment to be an umpire. If you're accosting an innocent spectator and threatening him with arrest before the game even starts, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you might have an attitude problem!

I can think of only a few limited circumstances where an umpire might have any right to say anything at all to this guy.

- If he is in one of the team's dugouts and acting as a representative of the team.

- If he is outside the dugout, but feeding information or data to one of the teams for coaching purposes.

- If his video set-up was in some way so distracting that it would interfere with the players playing the game.

Otherwise, leave it alone. There is no reason, based either in the rules or common sense, to say anything at all to the guy.

If I was this guy and somebody threatened to have me arrested for doing something I have every right in the world to be doing, I'd laugh and tell him he better call 9-1-1. :D
