Ump question

Have any of you coaches had an umpire lose it on a player in front of both teams, all the coaches, fans etc.... because she said "are you kidding me" about a call under her breath as she was walking back to the "dugout"? (this was indoor, wasn't really a dugout lol)

I've seen an umpire lose it and throw out a whole side of fans, he was tossing people left and right. The ones that were left were so appauled they pulled their kids and went home. It was a very uncomfortable situation.

Fans are adults. Little different. However, in this situation I think blue may have been more angry with the crowd, but he took it out on a player.

He must have been pretty wound tight to freak out on a player. Did the coach say something? I don't like anyone yelling at my players, if there is a problem they should come to me.

The umpire shouldn't have went off on her. He should have just tossed the player and went on.

As for the fan clearing... never had to do that ever. But, I have tossed a fan or two in my day. Usually for a cuss word or the time a pitcher's Mom said, "that ball didn't hit her" and as the girls was holding her side going to first base... the Mom opened up and said, " Hit her harder the next time"....LOL Obviously, I threw out the mother before someone commenced to doing something worse to her.

Funny thing about it... I go over in ground rules at the plate with the coaches that they are responsible for their fans. If I have to toss a fan.. I toss you as well.

It's funny to see the coaches go directly to the loud mouth parent and give fair warning to them...lol

He was definately wound tight. No one had said anything directly to him at all. But comments were made about calls (both ways). The pitch that caused the player to make a comment was one. However, she did not raise her voice or even look in his direction. No one heard her. Not even sure if he did.

I have no problem with him pulling the player and coach aside and talking to them sternly if need be. My problem was loudly chewing her out in front of everyone in attendance. Plus, I don't believe the comment warranted much more than a warning.

It was my kid and I will very very rarely defend her. In fact as she was walking out I was telling her she can't blame him, she should be swinging on strike 2, when he called her back and reamed her!

I talked to him after he was done umping for the day (away from everyone and politely), and he really is a piece of work!

He must have heard her... And if he did...he absolutely didn't need to go off on her. That is NEVER acceptable. He should have no doubt just tossed her for her comment and went on.

I never understand the parents and their thoughts of " No one said anything directly to him" when an umpire is sitting back there and you parents darn well know you are making your statement within earshot of the umpire. In that case, I definately will clear you completely away from me and the backstop area. Because they don't pay me to listen to you.

Sounds like to me, the parents and their comments led the girls into believing they could make those same type of comments without penalty... to which she found out differently.

But, I DO NOT CONDONE ANY UMPIRE GOING OFF ON A PLAYER.... Absoutely NEVER.

I totally understand respecting the umpire and all that, but tossing a player for saying "are you kidding me" under her breath? Even if he heard it, that is a pretty steep penalty for an "are you kidding me". If you are throwing players out for that, I don't believe you will have anyone left at the tournament because I hear worse than that at just about every game I've ever been to. Good luck finding many games to ump if you're tossing for that!! :lmao:

I umpire a lot Klump. I do women's, men's, boys baseball, co-ed and girls fastpitch.

See that the problem why these young umpires never stay around or event think about doing girls fastpitch... when they do baseball.

For some odd reason, fastpitch parents believe that they should be able to sit behind the screen and say what they want without penalty... and then that gets passed on to the girls because they hear their parents and then when they make the coment they get tossed and wonder " WHY". It's because they are on the playing field.

Baseball is different than softball and girls are different than boys. They play with their emotions, that is why there is alot of cheering in softball and none is baseball. Ladies tend to get really involved in a game and if you think they are not going to give you a comment or 2 under their breath, than you mustn't have a teenage daughter. I never condone disrespecting an umpire, but you are dealing with young girls here who are going to say things that they shouldn't. My advise to umpires like that, drop the rabbit ears or umpire baseball. You aren't doing the girls any good if you are tossing them for something as trivial as that. JMHO :)

Would have to agree with you Ohioquakerman, coached baseball for 10 yrs. Boys seemed to have or at least showed more respect toward parents, coaches and umpires as well as did the fans. Never let my players comment about call to the umpire, I did that! If a player did, i would pull him before the umpire could. Don,t know if its the difference between boys and girls or just changing times-seems like values, and behavior among SOME of our athletes and parents is on a downhill slide!

Klump: I have umpires from up North umpire for me and love it down this way because of the parent's attitudes versus up North

It doesn't matter if it is girls or boys..respect of the field is respect on the field.

You trying to tell me that boys don't play with emotions.

I already got an PM saying there was more to it than the poster states.

I will never condone an umpire yelling at a girl.

But sometimes the parents attitude and comments get passed on to the kids and then the kids think they can say that on the field like Mom and Dad and then they get the realization that they can't when the tossed from the game.

When we implimented last year the rule if the fan goes - the coach goes. Tournaments down here have been so much better.

I don't know if there was more to it or not, I wasn't there. I'm just saying that I think throwing players out of a game for saying "are you kidding me" under their breath is WAAAAAAY too extreme. I wouldn't, let them play. I don't know how many times I've heard it said that this is for the girls, not our own egos. That seems like that is throwing authority around more than enforcing a rule.

Ya, I just got a PM too. I'm not even involved in this situation and I'm getting an earful, or should I say an eyeful! I guess when people ask for your opinions, they only want the ones that agree with them. Please state that in your posts...ONLY SIMILAR OPINIONS PLEASE!!

LOL Klump.

I still say respect on the field no matter if it is a boy or girl.

Are we going to say, well it's a girl..like you said to me.

Doesn't matter to me. When a player is on the field.. respect is expected. If there is a problem, that is what a coach is for.. not a player to comment on.

Never would I ever yell at a girl. Actually if you remember right about three years ago, I went off on the guy in this forum who was at the USSSA States using "F" this and "F" that around these kids.

But, add the word "friggen" to the statement ( as this is what all three of the people who PM'd me said was said...so it must not been too much under her breath...

Then she is GONE ... especially when the whole sentence is " You got to be friggen kidding me". No ifs, and or buts about it. She's gone.

Some people have the right temperment to be an effective umpire, some don't. Anyone that "loses it" because some kid mutters something under their breath might not have the right temperment!

I've had a couple of players (they were adults, not kids) and a few coaches use the "You've got to be kidding me" line before. All I did was give them an icy glare and ask them, quietly, in my best "mean old umpire" voice, "What do you think I'm kidding about?". No more problems.

If you can't handle the heat, maybe you shouldn't be out on the field.

Bretman.. I think we was typing a post at the same time. Me at Post #19 and you at #20.

More than are you kidding me... and more than under her breath.
