My dd bought some catchers gear and the skull cap/helmet thingy does not have any " approved by " stamp . Is some seal or stamp necessary ? Will Blue check for it ?
Even catchers helmets are supposed to have the NOCSAE seal on it. It is really tough to see on some helmets though. I bet if you check it again you will find it hidden somewhere
When you say "skull cap" are you talking about a two-piece mask/helmet combination or is this a "hockey-style" helmet? Either way, they both must bear the NOCSAE stamp for high school play (and for most other sanctions as well).
A "skull cap" usually refers to the helmet worn by baseball catchers above the high school level. It's just a hard shell hat that covers the head that is worn with a conventional facemask. A true "skull cap" does not have ear flaps and any head covering without ear flaps will never be NOCSAE approved.
I'm glad they check. It's part of ensuring proper play which should include safety first. That's one of many things I like about ASA tournament umpires. They rarely skip this step. Can't say I've see that type of consistancy in all other sanctioning (not saying all skip it either). Sounds like High School standards are in good shape.
bretman answered what i needed to know, the dd was going old school with the traditional 2 piece , mask and skull cap. But it doesn't have ear flaps, so back to the drawing board --hope the company will take it back. And she thought she looked so cool. LOL
