Doesn't get any better on a Sunday morning than hearing a Sanford and Son reference and seeing Aunt Esther's mug. Dice has his "A" game back on!

It continued on Sunday. At Lucas Rec the 18u silver (really where the unknowns played) we had an umpire that gave the count as 1-3 (no mis-print) and insisted that it was just his "style". In fact, he had no style...and no class. I guess the homeless shelter is as good of place as any to pick up umpires when your tournament is run so unprofessionally. It is a shame that the NFCA associated itself with this tournament. Their part of the weekend was administered very professionally and I know will help a lot of ladies reach their college dreams.

You do NOT want to mess with the Bear. I wouldn't want to be that team in a rematch.

All the more reason to get rid of drop dead time limits and allow the girls to decide the game and not coaches who master clock management.

How about this scenario: Leadoff gets on first, next batter bunts the ball runs right down the line, was easily safe with good throw, but the fielder airmails the throw over the second baseman, as the runners reach second and third, umpire decides the girl obstructed the throw by running down the line. Next batter hits single which easily would have scored both runners. Lose tight game 1-0. In 7 years of watching and coaching have never had that call.

If the throw had no reasonable chance of retiring the runner, then it should not have been interference- no matter where the runner was running.

In a like number of years of umpiring (about a 500 game stretch), I think that I've had to make this call maybe twice.

Bretman,
? Thats exactly what we tried saying. The throw was at least 10 feet over the girls head.It cost us the game. Umps didnt want to hear it. The girl was running down the baseline anyways. Its upsetting knowing the girls worked so hard and for a game to be determined like that ...................in the 6th inning. It was huge !!!!!!!

Great post Bretman

I umpire also and it is not easy today. Your asked to make judgment calls and it is not allways going to be the call someone wanted but bottom line is it is your opinion as you saw the play happen. We as fans had better start treating the umps better cause there arn't alot of people out there jumping into the position . They are just tired of getting abused. And yes your right also there are alot of bad ones and even the goodones make mistakes sometimes - we are all just human.

Let me tell you both sides of umpiring/tournament director.

I am 50 and have a few years left in umpiring. Trouble is I can't umpire my own tournaments of course.... :'( ...

But, I have had to go to Southeastern Ohio, Eastern Kentucky and West Virigina to get umpires for this weekend's tournments in Wilmington. Teams begged me to not use NSA Columbus umpires.

I have the best I can find no matter where I have to go. Dayton crew is off limits to me this weekend due to their own things going on in Dayton area. I belong to the Dayton association as well as a few others and I hate having to tell my "umpire friends from Dayton" I can't use you so they can cover Dayton events....

This is why TD's should get on the ball and grab the best and leave the rest.

Bretman, you are welcome to come to Wilmington this weekend... if you are not busy. Just let me know.

I'd love to come down sometime. It's only about an hour and a half drive...

Seems the wife insists on a vacation once in awhile and in a few days I'm leaving for Wilmington...North Carolina, that is! So I'm going to miss the next two weekends and a couple of the biggest tournaments of the year. Bummer- but it's the price I have to pay for being on a ballfield just about every weeknight and weekend the rest of the season.

Seriously, if we can work something out for later in the season, I'd love to come down- if I'm not already booked up here around Columbus or gas isn't, like, 20 bucks a gallon by then! :)

And what is the percieved problem with the umpires who work NSA in Columbus? In my last tournament, I had nothing but compliments with the quality of officiating that we had. Even though this is none of your business, we had several officials who worked college softball and several higher levels of high school including regional, district, and state playoffs. We were also fortunate to have a gentleman who had just worked the dish in the D-3 college finals in Oklahoma City for the ASA.

It seems to me that you have some sort of axe to grind with the NSA in Columbus as you do nothing but slam us and our umpires with almost every chance you get.

Either your with us or your not, but the constant unprofessionalism you display on this message board does need to come to an end. You do not slam fellow umpires no matter whether you think you are right or wrong or can do it better. If your looking for a reason as to why umpires are quiting in droves, it is folks like you who do not support them unequivably no matter how correct or incorrect they may be.
