There are some 1b that will intentionally clog up that turn area to slow the runner rounding for 2. There are some coaches that will tell the 1b to do this. If its done enough there could be a little retaliation. That could be what you are seeing. She defiantly lowered her shoulder. Without knowing the complete history of that game that clips puts the blame on the runner. But if it is an intentional clog then they are just asking for what you see to eventually happen.

She peels towards her, is looking right at her, and lowers her shoulder. I think someone in her family plays safety lol. Reminded me of this

TJ WARD IS A FOOTBALL PLAYER. - YouTube

Is it possible she wasn't really paying attention on anything but hustling and realized only too late the first baseman was in the way and so she moved to brace for impact? Go back and watch the slo-mo and still frame it and watch what the runner does right after after collision. I think she was horrified what she had done.

Maybe I'm being naive but I would have to think that 99.99 percent of players would know better than to pull something like that on purpose by the time they make it to 18u.

Seconds 48-49 of the video the way she pulls her hand up over her mouth - the universal expression of "OMG what have I done?" All you can see is the back of her head you have no idea what her eyes are focused on. Maybe you are all right and it was malicious and she was just acting afterward. Maybe there's more than meets the eye.

It does seem interesting that the video ends by stating that the first baseman wasn't seriously hurt but doesn't mention what penalties, if any, were levied against the player.

Maybe the making of this video was a protest because nothing was called? The field ump was in a position to actually see the batter-runner's eyes and face.

The hand over the mouth could also be to hide her laughing just a thought.

Maybe I'm being naive but even if 1B is "intentionally clogging up the turn area", that is the umpire's responsibility to repair. I don't condone the players "fixing it" in the manner we see in this video.

If a runner is being obstructed (not just at first base, but anywhere on the field) it doesn't give her the right to blast the fielder into next week. If an obstructed runner subsequently commits an act of interference, the interference call takes precedence. We enforce the interference and ignore the obstruction.

I had a game earlier this year where a first baseman would camp out on the bag when there wasn't a play there, even if the ball was still in the outfield. It hadn't gotten to the point of being actual obstruction, but it could have. I told the fielder that she needed to stay out of the runner's way when no play was being made.

You'd think that a coach would appreciate the heads up to prevent a possible obstruction call against his team. But this coach took exception to me warning his player. He came out between innings, very aggitated, to admonish me for "talking to his player". Which tells me that this was probably a coached tactic on his part.

No your not Naive. Just looking for people to do the right thing. It can and does happen. Same as plucking a batter after a hr. Is it right. not by a long shot but it does happen.

Looks like there might be some history in this play. looks like she was telling her with the shoulder move or get ran over.
