Rule Question

I had a player today at an ASA tourney ejected for throwing the bat. They allowed me to sub a runner for her (they did not call her out). Also, although we never made it back thru the batting order, I was told I wouldn't have to take an out for her. I looked briefly in the rule book and didn't find complete coverage of this... What's the correct ruling?

Under straight by-the-book ASA rules, "carelessly" discarding the bat, like when it slips from the batter's hands or when the batter accidentally launches it with too much force after a hit, is...nothing! There is no penalty at all associated with a carelessly, or accidentally, thrown bat.

The only time a player can be ejected for throwing a bat- or any other piece of equipment- is if the bat is thrown intentionally, as when it is done in anger.

I'm not sure what was going on with the line-up issue. If a player is ejected, you can insert a substitute from the bench (as long as the sub is a legal sub with re-entry rights). That sub would stay in the line-up to bat and play defense.

Thanks Bretman. I knew if it was unintentional, it was not an out. She was ejected for "unsportsmanlike conduct" so maybe he thought it was on purpose... he didn't say. Since it was pool play in a time limit game, I just went with the flow.

I will say the umpires at the Hawks tourney were better than we had at Static and Bustos....might be the same crew, but we saw the better ones.

Bretman, thanks for the clarification on the "bat throwing".

Same girl was called out today for throwing the bat. Before you ask, yes, we are working on her to drop it. I asked the ump to show me the ruling. I think I made her mad. Play stood as called though. We were winning so I didn't push it (again).

Sounds like she needs work holding the bat.... One of the best ways I saw someone break a habit was wrap a dollar bill on the handle and if she didn't throw it, it was hers... Do it in practice though not a game....

That's not a bad idea - although I didn't allot any $$ for it in the team budget... Any other good ideas out there for breaking this habit??

Ask the dad for $20. I know I would pay it if it were my kid. I think that's the best idea I've ever heard for that. If $20 doesn't cover it then you have bigger problems than a kid throwing her bat.
