I've read a number of posts recently that questioned the process of players awards selection such as conference, league, state etc.
Let me throw this one out there and see what the OFC'ers think:
There is a coach in the Dayton area who is also a DII poll voter who has openly made comments to other coaches at their recent player award selection meeting that he will do anything he can to keep a particular state ranked rival from getting any state awards either for thier team or any player on that team. His reasoning was that the team gets too much hype in his opinion. He was not shy about making this point clear to anyone who would listen at the meeting. Of course he might consider in the future to be a little more descrete and not make such comments to people who happen to be good friends with the person who coaches the offended team.
Don't get me wrong, the coach in question has never been accused of being the sharpest tool in the shed, but you would think that a little more stealthy approach would be appropriate if you intend to purposefully harm or defame a fellow coach, team or players.
Now in the grand scheme of things I guess I could understand if a coach had an issue with another coach (especially if he has never had any success vs. him). If this is where it ended then so be it. However, the person in question seems to be making it his personal mission to take out his petty aggression on the players from the team as well. This is where I draw the line. I feel that no person who is tasked with the responsibility to objectively vote on players performances should use that tool as a weapon to make some kind of statement. Or at least if he is going to do it, maybe he should keep his petty intentions to himself and not boast to others about what he is doing and why.
Integrity should be the order of the day. Don't mess with student athletes who work hard all year long and deserve recognition just because you have never had any personal success vs them. This is not our roles as adults or as leaders of young adults. The actions that where taken by this coach and poll voter were deliberate and they were meant to be hurtful. The fact that he boasted to other coaches about what he was doing make it a despicable act.
Personally I think that his position as a poll voter should be in serious question given the fact that he openly made comments to other area coaches about how he has already affected this other team in the polls, and also how he would do what he could to see to it that players from that team would recieve no state awards. It would be nice to see him be held to a higher standard, assuming a standard even exists.
