Pull out of Nationals?

Not to bring up a similar thread but my 16U team is scheduled to attend York, PA. I have never been there but after reading posts, I'm thinking about pulling them out. Are there police around? Security? I read some teams said they would never go back. Some said there were numerous cars broken into. Very unsafe areas around the fields. I would rather lose 450 bucks then drive up there and end up leaving after one day because its unsafe. I wont let my girls play in an unsafe area. We will foreit on day one if it's that bad and come home. I need to act fast so what are your thoughts? We already sent in the money, stay or take the less and try to get in the Northern ASA in Kentucky?!

Maybe you could add a poll? I read the same thread as you and I say pull out and go to Kentucky....cut your losses.

I am a parent on a 14u team going there as well. I am getting very nervous about these posts. Are these people over exaggerating or are they for real? If it is as bad as they say, my family may have to make a decision to pull out even if the team goes. Safety comes first!

Our 11U Stingrays team decided not to go to Eastern Nationals once the location was announced early this year. I go out to York quite often to visit a customer and I would never "choose" to bring my family there. I would not recommend spending the money - the safety factor aside, it's just not a real fun place to be - I think if ASA gets a mass exodus from York they will understand that more thought has to go into choosing a location for Nationals.

I thought 14u ASA Eastern was in Maryland this year?

16u "B"'s are in York. . . My team is going there and I am going to call and do some investigative work today. I know a few that were there last year and they did not say anything about the muggings. They were just making comments about the general downturn in the area. I would take a guess that many people are making the comments based on perceptions verse what actually happened.

The authorities would have statistics on the number of muggins last year during the event. I would say you've had just as many cars broken into as there were at OSP last year in the parking lot.

When we were there last year I heard no reports of any muggings or cars being broken into. The city has it's ice rink basically in the middle of all the fields and that place was packed constantly.

Sure the area is depressed and if you went looking for trouble I'm sure you would find it, but we didn't experience any nor did anyone with us. It's a far cry from Salem or Sterling as quality goes.

I spoke to Warren Jones about it after we returned last year and he indicated that the main office was aware of the situation and things would be a changing. Like anything else it just doesn't happen overnight.

I just sent an e-mail to Tina Sanders the TD for the 14u B's to garner some information as to their plans to increase security of the parking lots and the general area around/near the fields. I will advise as to her response.
Go to the York PA? and read what Mike just posted in regards to police reports in the area during that time frame last year. Sounds like a lot of hype is going on. . . .area may be in a poor state, but as to the muggings, sounds like it is no different than other areas.

This is softball . Why would anyone in their right mind want to go to a location like this. For most families this is their vacation. If you have to look up police records on number of muggings and you still want to go, something is wrong there. Maybe its the hype of playing ASA but it makes no sense to me

16u Bowling Green Kentucky is where I'd be if I was a 16u team.
Different dates though for the Kentucky event.

I'd bet that the 16u division is going to be HUGE in Kentucky. Last year's Northern had over 120 teams

lightningcoach. . .just mentioned the reports because if you want to know the truth on an issue facts are the best place to look. I will not base a decision based on hype. Fields might not be top notch, I don't know, but I have to at least investigate before passing judgement.

Have you checked the Things to do list for Terra Haute Ind. Not much there either. We got our car broken into a couple years ago at the Ohio State Fair in broad daylight. Did we stop going to the fair. No.

Have to laugh Mike. I grew up 35 miles from Terra Haute. . .there is a high security federal pen that brings in a lot of transit families. . . .There is dirt track racing for sprint cars at the fair grounds south of Honey Creek Mall. . . other than the mall and sprint cars, there is nada to do.

Like any town Terra Haute has is good areas and very bad areas. Cleveland, Chicago, and St. Louis are the same. I played 3 years ago at Northern Nationals in St. Louis in the middle of the ghetto on average fields. Never heard of any issues, only one car broken into and they had left it unlocked with a purse sitting on the floor board. . .

Sounds blown out of proportion to me. I've been there and although it wasn't the ritziest town I've ever been to, I didn't fear for my life or anything. Noone mugged me or broke into my car and I didn't hear any reports of it happening to anyone else.

Klump I tend to agree with you. I have a feeling most people are complaining due to not meeting expectations vs. actuals. Was there in 2006 and I found it to be average.

Doug Moenich was there last year and he seems to have the same thoughts that you have.

Well from someone who has been there personally and is a Police Officer for over 18 years we would never go back ! I sat and watch at least 3-4 drug deals go down 30 yards from our fields!!! I personally spoke to several of the police officers in the parking lot while they were taking car breakin reports and they said 'it was out of control' now that was 4 years ago has it changed ? I dont know, but blown out of proportion as Klump says not in my book!!!!

Actually there was 64 teams in the 16U Northern last year. A great field of teams. There could be upwards of 75 plus this year with teams looking away from York PA.

Our team is planning on going to KY, so I say go to KY. We have one last shot this weekend at the big show in College Station,Texas, but we already have a berth secured to KY.

It might have been 2008 as I had a chart of how many teams ended up going to every nationals/regional nationals, etc... in every association.

I might have been thinking of the total as they had played two age groups there that weekend that year in Owensboro.

Somebody should call her and find out the amount. I bet it is huge.

Great location for the Southern region "jumpers" and Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi to attend.

Brenda doesn't has to worry about working with the city or the county concerning fields... as she IS the Parks and Rec Director:lmao:
