Fairmont vs Xenia cancelled. Neither place playable.

I guess I got some bad info on this. Xenia had to take a division game today. We couldn't get any takers on the short notice. Our freshmen did get on our field today.

This is a weakest overall conference in the GWOC. The addition of Greenville helps but not enough to make that big a difference this year. Here's how I see it for 2011:

1) Vandalia Butler

Pitching matters and overall 0in the GWOC North pitching is not this conferences strength. It looks like Vandalia has the best pitcher in (Haer), and that gives them the edge. Their offense is above average but on most days a top level pitcher will handle them. I'm not sure if they will improve on their 15-9 record of last year but they should improve their GWOC record of 9-4. They should handle everyone in the conferenc and split with Greenville. That will be the difference.

2) Greenville

Yea I know that most will have them penciled in to win the North easily but really they have zero pitching. Fisherbacks graduation left a grand canyon sized void in the pitching and while they might have the best offensive and defensive team that they have had in years (however the catching spot is a huge question mark), its just too hard to win 10-8 every game. I look for them to do well overall because they are well coached but I can't see them beating the teams with the best pitching in the GWOC like Lebanon, West Carrollton, Miamisburg, and Centerville. I predict a 20-8 season, and an early exit from the palyoffs.

3) Piqua

Piqua is a team that just gets a little better every year. They have hard working players but lack true studs. They are well coached and pitch well enough to once again finish in the middle of the pack in the North. Last year they were 12-15 overall but played very well against good teams. They lost to Butler, Greenville, Wayne, and Miamisburg all by 1 run. They were 8-5 in the GWOC North and should improve on that by 1 or 2 wins this year.

4) Troy

This spot was a tough choice between Troy and Sidney. Troy has better talent but a big question mark with the new coach there. The new coach (Herman) last coached at Middletown Madison where he had one of the best pitchers in the state. He was there only one year and there was alot of drama. At Troy he will not enjoy the luxury of having that type of Ace and it will be interested to see how the players take to his unique style. With the talent they have there, this team could easily end up near the top of this Conference. Early success will help.

5) Sidney

Could have been up one spot but overall I'm not sure that they have the same talent level as Troy. Last year they finished 6-19 and they will be challenged to get to 10 wins overall. I will admit that I don't know as much about some of the players on this team because I didn't have the chance to see many of them during the summer.

6) Trotwood

Seriously all I have to say is they have a new coach, and he has big job in front of him. The good news is, there is nowhere to go but up. The cold hard fact is that Trotwood is winless in the GWOC during the last 5 seasons. I for one am rooting for them to break that streak this season. I predict that they will do that this spring. Won't be shocked if they don't but I see them sneaking up on someone and breaking that streak. Good luck there coach.

Greenville locks up the GWOC North tonight at 8-0. Lady Wave pitcher Ashley Hanes goes to 12-2 on the mound, way to go kid and to the entire Lady Wave team.
Greenville moves on to the Champions Challenge in Loudonville this weekend.
PS ( Dad is very proud of you Pee Wee )

Congrats to the Wave!!! Not sure how you beat Lebanon and they are ranked in the top 10?! Regardless, kudos for another good year!!

So lets see how I did so far on my GWOC predictions. GWOC Central first.

Before the season I said:

1) Wayne: Yes I know that this is a change but there are some rumors floating around out there that the Northmont pitcher (Jess) is not 100% right now. That not only closes the small gap that was seperateing these two teams but now firmly places Wayne as the team to beat in the Central. The pitching is adequte and the offense can make things happen. If they have a slight chink in the armor I would say thats its their defense. Good but not great.

2) Centerville: I feel that this will be one of the biggest surprise teams in the GWOC. They have all the tools to play with any team in the GWOC but they must not have the let downs that might allow them to lose a close game to teams that shouldn't beat them. I get the feeling that they will get over that hump this spring, and if they do they could win the central.

3) Northmont: Even if there ace is not 100% this team has enough talent, and is coached well enough to still place them above most of the rest of the teams in the Central. Their offense can handle most of the pitchers in this conference and the rest of the GWOC, and their defense is solid. If the Ace is fine then I reserve the right to move them back to the #1 or #2 spot.

4) Springfield: I know that most are scuffing at this selection but the simple fact is the pitcher here is head and shoulders above the other teams at 5 and 6. For that matter she has the potential to be in the top 1 or 2 in the conference if the defense plays as well as expected behind her this Spring. Scoring runs will still be a little bit of an issue for them but I'll still take the dominate pitcher and try to sneak a few runs in. Springfield will surprise this Soring, just remember you heard it here first.

5) Fairmont: These last two spots are pretty much a tie but I will give the edge to Fairmont overall because they typically have better athletes. The pitching is nowhere near what Fairmont should be able to produce but it will be good enough in the games where they are not playing the top 3 or 4 teams in the GWOC. Of course the offensive stats will be great once again (they always are) but this team really needs a solid playoff win to gain some confidence.

6) Beavercreek: this team could be anywhere between 4th to 6th but I place them here based strickly on gut feeling. I saw them play a few times last season and vs good teams they simply struggle. Northmont shut them out twice, and Wayne beat them soundly twice and only allowed 1 run in the process. Until they show they can beat those top teams in the conference (at least split with them) then this is where they belong.

Where we stand right now:

1) Fairmont: Looks like they have a good shot at winning the Central The game vs. Wayne will be huge and might decide the Central Champ because more then likely Fairmont will beat Beavercreek twice so that makes the game against Wayne for all the marbles.

2) Centerville: By far they have been the best team in the Central this year. They will finish with the best overall record and still have a chance to win the central but must count on Wayne beating Fairmont and them sweeping Wayne. That will be a tough task. They will do well in the playoffs because they are the most complete team in the Central.

3) Wayne is probably the biggest surprise in the Central. 5 of their 6 wins in Ohio this year are games that they should have won, and theres no way to tell how good the competition was that they played out of state. I know that there will be Wayne supporters come on here and say that those were the best teams that the state of KY has ever put together but outsdie of family members nobod else really knows. I say that after the two remaining games vs. Centerville and the one game vs Fairmont we will know who Wayne is this season. They can still prove me right and win the GWOC Central.

4) Northmont: well I had them slotted to finish 3rd and I'm not sure if that can happen now but actually they are playing better then I thought they would. This team can and should play well in the playoffs because they are well coached and no how to win.

5) Beavercreek: Well I said anywhere from 4th to 6th so 5th seems just about right. It looks like they will have an overall loseing record once again. Nice wins vs Northmont and Butler.

6) Springfield: I thought that Springfield might get over the hump this year especially with the early win over Greenville. With the easy schedule they had I expected a .500 season. They really need a new coach there. Too much talent thats not being developed.

Well there it is, my almost end of the season report on the GWOC Central. Next up the GWOC North.

Centerville and Northmont split Friday night's DH. That should help Fairmont solidify the Central title :( Centerville over Fairborn and Covington in 2 tough, close matches on Saturday.

note to MC Hammers - great meeting you Friday and thanks for the 'info', we definitely took it to heart. Don't know if you saw the brilliant DDN blurb in Saturday's paper, They mixed our daughters up, Libby (Laurel) Hopf and Kate (Kat) Hopf :lmao: my girls would be doing well to be mistaken for yours!! Good luck against Sidney and hopefully we will see you again on the 11th.
