Here is my summary of the GWOC South 2011 season:

My pre-Season prediction was:

1) Lebanon
2) Miamisburg
3) West Carrollton
4) Fairborn
5) Springboro
6) Xenia

Actual:

1) Miamisburg: I did mention that Miamisburg had a chance to battle Lebanon for the title and clearly they did. Other then the split with Lebanon they easily handled everyone else in the confrence. They did beat Fairmont twice, but the loses to Northmont and Wayne in the crossover games make me believe that the real power this season was in the Central. I feel good about thier playoff chances but the late season whipping they got from West Liberty Salem is a big concern.

2) Lebanon: Yes I had them picked to win the South easily, obviously I was wrong. However they did have a solid season and if you look at their loses they were to some very good teams like Milford, Greenville, Miamisburg, and Centerville. But the loses to weaker teams like Waynesville, and fairborn make me wonder which team will show up in the playoffs.

3) Fairborn: I also missed this by one position. I had them finishing under .500 and they ended up with a GWOC South record of 6-4 and an overall record so far of 13-8. They are still giving up too many runs (second most in their confrence) thats the sixth most in a league of 18 teams. The offense will have to carry them vs. playoff pitching.

4) West Carrolton: This has to be the disappointment of the GWOC South conference. It looked like they had all the eliments before the season started to compete with any team in the GWOC. Very good pitching, an above average hitting team and a favorable schedule. Its not like they have been getting smoked, they have just been a little short too many times. The offense has seemed to let them down a little. Its hard to imagine that this team could end up under .500 for the season.

5) Springboro: this team is actually a pleasant surprise. They could end up finishing above .500 overall. Still think they need to schedule some tougher competetion if they ever want to go deep into the playoffs.

6) Xenia: Pretty much as I expected.

Next Up the GWOC North.

Here is my summary of the GWOC North 2011 season:

My pre-Season prediction was:

1) Vandalia
2) Greenville
3) Piqua
4) Troy
5) Sidney
6) Trotwood

Actual:

1) Greenville: Yea, I went out on a limb here and the limb broke. Clearly Greenville is the best team in the GWOC once again and the Jr pitcher (Hanes) who was unknown at the beginning of the season has now won 20 games and allowed fewer runs then any other pitcher in the GWOC. They hit well, play strong defense and now they are pitching well again. Another strong playoff run seems likely. The only blemish on their strong 20-4 season so far is a loss to Springfield early in the season. Doesn't seem like that has happened again.

2) Butler: The Aviators have had a nice season and they should do well in the playoffs. They can score some runs and the pitching is good enough to get it done. They are 7-1 in the last 8 games and they haven't really losy to a weaker team except Beavercreek this season.

3) Piqua: Right where I had them picked. This is a tough team that is well coached and can score some runs. Thier only losses this season were to team at the top of the GWOC like Greenville, Miamisburg, and Fairmont. They also lost to Troy to split the season series and that was a 2-1 extra inning loss. They can play with anybody in the GWOC and I look for them to have a shot at a district title this postseason.

4) Troy: Again right where I had them picked. New coach has done a decent job there but the pitching is average at best and they need more feared hitters. .500 is right about where I had them. They are beating all of the weaker teams that they should but vs better competition like Wayne, Greenville, Miamisburg, and Centerville they just don't have enough. They tend to have too many extremes. Either too high or too low. They have to find a way to bring the same emotion every game.

5) Sidney: Right where I had them picked.

6) Trotwood: Right where I had them picked. This was my iron clad, stone cold pick of the season.

Coming up next, my total GWOC season summary once everyone has complete thier games. I will rank the GWOC from top to bottom and predict who will go deep into the playoffs.

Lebanon won against Trotwood last night and the score was insignificant. Also as all of the experts have posted. They did finish last in the Central. But that TEAM I saw last night, would make any Coach proud to say they were their girls. Those young ladies played together and worked hard the entire game. I do not know the Coach's name, but he and his staff have done a great job with these young ladies. Congrats!!!!

Coach Payne has done a great job with those girls, what a turnaround!!! Unfortunately their levy failed and he is worried that the program may go away...what a shame that would be with all the progress they have made in just a year....

Fortunately they are second highest in their conference and 5th overall in runs scored in the GWOC so maybe that will offset the runs allowed part of the equation. Our pitching has been well enough to win games. Our Defense is anything but solid unfortunately. All I can hope is they jell as a team and play D the last few games of the season. But its still a one up on last season lasting longer than the 1st round lol.

Tim, I agree the offense is solid. As I mentioned they will have to carry them thru-out the playoffs. As the pitching gets better as the rounds progress the pitchers tend to get better as well, and then that advantage is minimized. Overall a pretty good season, and I think Fairborn will make a little noise in the tournament. Good luck.

Funky you did well overall in your predictions (thus far, still some games left), but is there even a question which division is the toughest between the three??? Not even close.

Yeah the Burg was lucky to win any games outside the weak South Conference :)

I never implied that Miamisburg was "lucky" to win any games outside the South. Also, I never implied that the South conference was weak. What I did state is that the real power seems to be in the Central because when matched up head to head those teams defeated Miamisburg. Is that not an accurate statement?

Chewy, thanks for the acknowledgement. I have no problem siting where I missed and giving kudos to team that may have proven me wrong. I will stand by the fact that for the most part my predictions were pretty close.

With North and South determined, tonight's game of Fairmont vs. Wayne should decide the Central, if I am not mistaken. As I understand, Wayne has to beat Fairmont and Centerville has to beat Wayne, if Fairmont wins tonight they win Central regardless...big game tonight...c'mon Wayne, help us out!!! :D

I realize Fairmont might be available, but doesn't Wayne have a tournament game? :D

I pick Wayne is this game because with the first round playoff loss by Fairmont it will be hard to motivate them. If Wayne scores early this game will be over emotionally for them.

On the other hand if the game is close or Fairmont scores early they might just realize that this game IS their season.

I still choose Wayne mainly because they have better coaching and a bigger reason to play. (Plus I need them to win because I picked them in my pre-season predictions :)

We are both tied at 7-2. We both have a game left with Wayne. Centerville on Thurs and Fairmont on Fri. Either team can claim a share of the title.
