Wow ... if it got extended 2 weeks, that would have a MAJOR impact on travel ball, and I would guess that more players would actually choose not to play HS ball. And the whole thing about the season extending way past the school year, and into and even past graduation for seniors seems like a really bad idea for softball all the way around. I have to believe that most coaches would rather it end earlier as well.

I saw this article earlier tonight & thought "Well, that just cut 2-3 weeks out of the travel ball season.
So what now? Teams who charge $1,000 or more can only play 4-5 tourneys because the school season gets over so late.
We are the innocent victim of the fact that many schools bus their softball and baseball teams together, and extending the season for baseball allows the pitchers to get more rest in between pitching times. So, travel softball will suffer because the high school baseball pitchers need more rest??

Bad idea.

Softball should be a fall sport and Volleyball should be spring! Every August and September I sit in a gym while it is 80 degrees and sunny outside and every spring i sit outside while it is 45 degrees and raining!

What's the chances OHSAA separates baseball & softball? Cause if they don't you'll never have fall softball. OHSAA is going to vote on extending the season not moving it to fall. This is a seriously bad idea imo. Make your voice known to OHSAA. Seriously 3rd weekend of June would be the final four. That means districts are the current Dayton Metro weekend, regionals is Lasers/Scenic City weekend. Plus what about the kids that play high school baseball/softball that play other club sports? It may make them choose one sport.

agreed CoachJWB. the best thing is definitely to move to a fall schedule. the pitching regs for baseball shouldn't force softball to comply since they don't have those regs.
a majority of the girls who arent on killer school teams are looking forward to travel season start, now you want to push that back a couple of weeks? don't get it at all. and you can;t push travel back because you then start interfering with the start of school. glad this won't affect my kid.

I floated the idea a couple of weeks ago that Ohio should move softball to the fall and got the usual critical response. Glad to see that there are others who share that view. This proposal only makes me feel more strongly that it should switch with volleyball.

Fall would be interesting and makes sense. Switching with Volleyball will never happen though. Just look across the border to Michigan and see what happens if Volleyball is any other time than the fall. Volleyball Club season extends through June with Nationals. You move them to the Spring and those idiot parents and club coaches will sue.

Even though, I wish they would move it, I would imagine OHSAA would carry both baseball and softball together. And I am pretty sure they aren't going to mess with Football and Baseball in the same season. I understand there aren't as many dual sport athletes as back in the day, but I think there would be huge outcry. The reasoning for the move for Softball would also have the same reasoning as it would in Baseball. If the change for Softball would come to table, I think you would have those baseball-only loving athletes ask, "what about us" mantra.

I say leave Softball/Baseball alone.. in the future (possibly way future) I can see that there will be more and more schools switching to the all-weather fields causing less rainouts etc --- Figuring out safer ways to play softball games on all-weather FOOTBALL fields can help cancellations in the near future.

Not sure if it is true what I am hearing is part of the reason they want to extend the season is because of baseball and the new pitch count rule.

Moving to the fall could be great for the regular season but suck for the tournament. You would be playing regional and the state tournament in November.

Playing in the fall would be ideal for high school softball. But how much would it hurt the recruiting process for many, many girls? Seems like there are a lot of girls getting looks from college coaches at all these big fall Showcases......
If they are actually considering the Student Athlete - they need to leave it alone....

CaptainT I totally agree with you. Most recruiting gets done between ITB and PGF in the summer because the College programs are either in the playoffs or in transition. Extending the season by 2 weeks in the spring may be a better alternative than playing in the fall because as you point out... A TON of recruiting gets done in the fall between all of the camps and showcases. There are so many kids getting looks and camp invites in the fall showcases that you would almost be forced to invoke the nuclear option and skip HS ball altogether if you have any aspirations of getting recruited by a big time college program... that is IF they would go to a fall season. I know this sounds like a broken record but if OHSAA really gave 2 cents about the "student athlete" and not their own product they would drop the "no travel ball" restriction during high school and none of this would matter at all.

What about families going on vacation as soon as school ends, and "senior-it is" which can already be bad enough?! I think many agree that fall would be better, but there are some possible complications around weather for the tourney and most of us just don't think it's going to change any time soon. I don't have a dog in the fight any more, but I would be fighting it somehow, some way if I did ...

A lot of these fall showcases will become fall bust in general with new recruiting guidelines at least for D1....I have no problem playing state championship in November as well. Should be 75 and sunny

My daughter is more partial to travel ball and was not a big fan of school ball if they extended it I could see her not wanting to play school ball at all!!! I wish Ohio would just let them play with both school and travel and just make it a rule that if games are on same day school ball come first.

Exactly. OSHAA is hurting these kids more than anything. The only good part about spring ball for, HS, is no college coaches around to really care. If you move it to fall, now you have more time for colleges to recruit from HS ball and less from travel? College coaches cant be in two places at the same time in the spring. Not sure that's the solution. For the weather yes. What about blackouts from NCAA coaches? How would that impact fall HS? I like the prospects of being like, surrounding states, allow both at the same time.
