Pitching and Pitchers Discussion 10U pitcher throwing 55 MPH? Really?

Okay time for my two cents since I was the other one with the gun......All this talk back and forth just ticks me off....and that's all it is is just talk. Everyone will know the truth when games start to be played until then who cares what anyone else says. As CarMad said we have a pretty good little team that on paper should be good...but as is always the case what is on paper sometimes does not mean squat once the games are played. We seem to have good hitting and pretty good defense....not to mention most know nothing of our second pitcher. So let's just calm down cause we will all start to see what everyone has in a couple of weeks....but one more thing....be careful what you ask for as you might just get it.

I dont think Chris meant any malice with his initial comments, but we are in the 2nd week of February and this "stuff" has already started. First, I had one coach tell us that our pitcher doesn't throw "that hard" and HAD to get out his gun to tell me that she was only throwing 48...she went out and gave up 7 hits in 3 games on the way to a tournament win...hard enough for me. Second, I had a coach tell a parent on our team that we only win because we play great defense and have pretty solid pitching...amazing insight. As you can tell by my profile name, I have a daughter that works her *** off to be the best pitcher she can be and that is all we can ask. Hit the corners...keep them guessing.

what a joke. There is always some parent out there wanting to boost their own ego because they made it no where in sports as a kid. How about let the kid be a kid and if she is that good at 14u let her accept an incoming scholarship offer. My daughter is currently in 14 u and throws around 53 but she can hit locations and throws 4 pitches. If all you have is a hard fastball good luck because you will get rocked when they get to 12 u. while at 10 u you will have lot of kids siply just afraid of the sped. I have also seen many girls blow their arms out as well because daddy does not understand pitching is not about how hard you throw. It starts with location not speed , then comes the ability to adapt to throwing other pitches consistently.

My daughter is a pitcher, my daughter throws heat, her pitching kept us in a lot of games at 10u , however at 10u your focus should be effective base running and eliminating defensive errors. This is a team sport, and while a great pitcher can keep you in games, she cannot earn you any runs. Be sure you can score! My dd first no hitter was a 5-0 loss, drop thirds and the other team's aggressive base running was a brutal awakening. Let's start a thread about the big offensive teams out there, that will be an exciting topic!

Dude I remember that game! Champion in April 2012.

This all started because someone couldn't keep their own mouths shut about someone else's daughter......therein lies the problem.

wizard, parent did not start this thread what so ever! The parents based on the response handled it very PC

Yes, you guys made me appreciate the finer points in fastpitch. I had a fairly big head when it came to my dds pitching, but you shrunk it down to size and opened my eyes to a complete team effort. Hope to see you guys around this summer!

I was just making a point that we have to many people just wanting to run their mouths and they do not have the girls best interest at mind . Parents and coaches need to remember this is not about them it is about the girls and teaching them life long lessons. It certainly does not help to have anyone running their mouth. Please we have not even started the season yet. I would however enjoy to have the oppurtunity to watch this young lady pitch. I would be curious to see how well her mechanics are as many of these so called flame throwers have poor mechanics because they have never actually been taught how to PITCH they just know how to throw.

Wizard I agree with what your saying but did you at least take the time to read through the thread? At what point was I running my mouth? I have been perfectly happy staying under the radar (no pun intended). I click on a post about a young girl throwing some serious smoke and find out it was a bunch of nonsense about my kid. I posted the reality as best as I could. Gathering a hoard to show up at our games with a 1 million dollar radar gun so he can say I told you so is not cool. We are perfectly fine going about our business in peace. And don't get on here acting like I'm clueless to what is appropriate and safe for my kid. Again you don't even know me! We didn't So Call her nothing! She works very hard with a reputable coach and I am very proud of her.

Allow me to state why I started this in the first place. I have no malice in mind (whoever stated that already knows me quite well because I never have anything bad to say about any kid on any team).
Fact is...if this is true and from the responses this post has received I would say it is then that is awesome. This is like catching a 50" Muskie. 55 MPH @ 10. Awesome!!
Seriously.

I never intended to mention the specific team for fear that it might point out a particular player because again I never intend any personal malice. Never. Simple fact....I am very much impressed.
When i was told this girl hit 55 I said "What? 55? WOW!!!!!!!"

I'm impressed and I can't wait to see her. When I do, I won't be the guy who says "she's illegal...her change-up is suspect...she's a premadonna..."
I will say "Nice pitching young lady.", and smile because I know I will have just witnessed something I may not see again.

I personally don't have a dog in this fight. I coach 12U.
Carmad...I think I recall the parent's screen name correctly...I am very impressed with the abikities
of your DD. I say this will all honesty.
In fact, I might hunt you down in a few weeks to introduce myself just so I can see her pitch. Good luck this season. (again....sincere...no sarcasm)

aka "Glory guy". <---that's actually kinda funny. I'm not upset at all about that. Like they say in Hollywood, "At least they are talking about you!" :)

Thank you. I was only trying to set the record straight. If she hit 55 its news to me! There are times when it really looks fast to people and maybe that's where it started. Come by and say hello we can start over.

Indeed!
I will be there watching my daughter who doesn't play for my team. She's younger.
Be proud of your DD. Understand I was never nay-saying anything about her. I was just so shocked that it was real. You know what? The # doesn't mean anything except for people who like to measure their stats. If 44 seems fast, then 44 is fast. That # just seemed huge to me. I have heard about your DD through the rumor mill and I can't wait to see her.

Now...back to my nightly 90 minute OFC reading.

She is a great kid and CarMad is being modest about her...she is dedicated and well coached... my DD has played with her for years. I assure you...She's a "pitcher" I have never heard the 55mph even suggested and for the record if mph came up it has always been downplayed...for years she's been hitting a few mph over the "advertised speed" of the spectators (not the dad)...but until she is consistently hitting a number deep in a game he shuts people down as others talk her up.

Guys...she's 10...she's one of the hardest working kids I've seen and she's maintained that work ethic for all the years we've known her (that would be 4)...when she throws 55 in the fourth inning in July a few times he'll give it to her...till then keep watching for her to pull that string or have the bottom drop out of of that 1-2 pitch...'cuz she isn't a one pitch thrower....she is a pitcher and she isn't 6'1"

PS
Watch what you say because D1 big sis swings an awfully big bat in that household too:)

Last year at 10u my daughter would consistently hit 45-47 range. We saw quite a few teams and I did not really see any girls that were like "HOLY COW look how fast she throws!". Many of the faster pitchers seemed to be in that range and there were quite a few girls that could take that pitch and drive it good. If the pitcher does not have a defense behind her, it won't matter in the final score.

We were at the Summer Stingrays Showcase down at Coffey Park last year. Was just down there with my eldest daughter an 8 year old, showing her the atmosphere, and making sure that this is what she wanted to be a part of with soon-2-be tryouts coming up! Wasn't affiliated with any program or organization... I'm a small private school athletic director and brought our jugs gun down to see what the speed really was to train her before she hit the tryout road. Most teams #1 were throwing 46-45, but we saw two girls that were really bringing with accuracy. We saw many games, but not all of them....Not sure the Last Names of the girls, but The ace on on the Laserswhite was consistently hitting 52-53 against the Indy Gators and the Ohio Storm ace was consistently 55-56 against the Stingrays Mason team. So I totally believe that there could be a girl around the area that could be somewhere around that mph and accurate.

My DD would be the one from Lasers White that you speak of. Thank you for the info! We (her pitching coach and I) have not put her on any type of radar since she started working at the age of 6yo for many reasons. First and foremost, I never wanted to be "that pitcher's parent" throwing speeds out :), when and if I am asked, I just tell them I have no idea, but I am on the receiving end 4 times a week, and it's not fun to catch. Second, speed gets hit, you have to move the ball around, and spin is king so we work on that, and location a lot more than anything. Third, if she knew where she stood mph wise, would she work as hard as she currently does to get any better? Maybe, can't say she wouldn't slack a little she is 11 after all. If you are successful, or get rocked, what does it really matter how fast you throw? As we would say in baseball "Fast in, Fast out!" if it was straight heat.

Speed is overrated, the name of the game on defense is to get outs however that may be and runs allowed, Amanda Freed 3 time All American and Olympian at UCLA never threw high heat, her changeup was her money pitch. Location and movement is the name of the game. Sure speed will matter increase chances if location and movement are there also but way too much emphasis on speed alone by some.
