Mike, it has been a while since I have been at Stingrays and to say the least for them to have PAC ten school in attendance is impressive for an Ohio event.

If schools out west are willing to travel to Ohio yes, I think they will take the time to see a 14U player that most likely attended a camp/clinic or, showed real interest in going to their school.
As far as age, I did see an article a few months back in SI about an SEC school getting a verbal from a 12 year old for gymnastics...

The bigger D1 programs are going deeper into age groups to find talent, Hard to believe that a 12 or 14 year old is worth the effort but these crazy coaches are doing it!

IMO, It feeds into the corporate area of the game that has been discussed in other forums,
Players are no longer a player but pieces of the product... male or female in the business of sport... You can go to many websites/forums to see what is happening....
IMO, not a positive change in our sporting environment but one that is happening and one we will need to deal with..

Know where you want to go. Do not dream about it plan for it. Set goals and Make It Happen!

Since I usually am the one announcing Teams and Players of the Week though, I can't even make a verbal commitment that anyone will announce it ....

You should see if you can get a person who anonymously talks smack about 14 year old girls on the internet to announce it, I quoted one a few posts back. I'm a big fan of irony.

Mike, I have a great idea! Why don't you come on the radio show to debate this topic either this Tuesday or next? I'll have to get clearance from Ricky, but we have a D2 coach and two high level travel coaches who often co-host and who know way more about this subject than me. I bet we could clear up a lot of the misconceptions people have, and do a public service for our listeners. What do you think?

Don't let this thread take away from the overall great event and skills displayed at all four of the parks. Seeing allot of games this weekend, the girls continue to be as talented as ever and the event will continue to be the premiere event in the state of Ohio. Watching the bombs over the fences were a treat this year as well......

Not only is this by far the premiere event in the state of Ohio, this event is the premiere event in the Mid-West.

I have to chime in on this one. Taran Alvello verballed before the start of or just after the start of her Freshman year. Here is a running list that gets updated constantly of kids all over the country that verbal. In whatever form the scholarship may be offered, it doesn't matter as I learned "everyone" gets a full ride athletically so lets not bring that subject up. LMAO

Mike you have me scratching my head at what you are trying to infer. We all know that a verbal to a college guarantees you nothing. In fact...no money can even be offered to a student/athlete until they have applied and been accepted to the school of their choice, filled out all the financial aid paperwork, been cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse, etc. The reality of a verbal is it basically tells all other college coaches that this player has made their decision to attend such and such school and that I am no longer on the market. It is also a tool college coaches can use to keep the vultures away from their prospect. No coach wants to be known as a coach that is going around poaching kids that have already decided where they want to go....that only happens in travel softball!!!

14U @ Pickerington Central Softball Complex – The championship game for this age group was in process when weather forced an early conclusion before the 4th inning was completed:
Co-Champion = Birmingham Thunderbolts 99
Co-Champion = Indiana Prospects Premier

LOL @ Cynic

While I feel a little guilty having helped hijack this thread yesterday, I do want to note that the subject of verbal commitments will be discussed on the Radio Show tomorrow.

The recruiting rules generally kick in when they become a "prospective student-athlete" (see 13.02.12), which is when they start classes for 9th grade. Coaches can start emailing PSA's Sept 1 at the start of their junior year (see 13.4.1 Recruiting Materials). They can contact them off-campus (see 13.1.1.1) and call them (see 13.1.3.1) on July 1 after their junior year.

There is no restiction on PSA's calling coaches. However, the coaches cannot return calls until after the junior year, so you have to keep calling until you get ahold of them. Coaches that are really interested in a player will pass a message through the TB coach with a good time to call.

Thank you! I am obviously new to all of this, so I appreciate the information.

Thank you!

No problem. Hopefully, when your DD approaches recruiting age, her Travel coach can help educate your family about what to do, what to expect, and where to find resources. If your DD is serious about playing college ball, finding the right travel team/coach/organization is of utmost importance.

Agree 100% with finding the right travel team/coac/org. It Matters which team you play for because of some of the items listed prior on this thread - coaches have limited time and can't travel to all tourneys so they have to be efficient and get bang for recruiting buck. Families need to adjust to this mentality to improve chances!

Thank you. It was a 180 degree turnaround after getting out scored 23-0 in pool play. Sometimes my team just doesn't care until bracket starts. And yes our pitcher did have colleges watching her pitch, in fact there were 3-4 at our game against Birmingham and Pitt was there Saturday night for our first bracket game. She is a great kid and "showcasing" her has allowed several of her teammates to also attract attention from college coaches.

I also want to say SoCal_Dad is also correct that players can call coaches but missed calls can not be returned. Last week I got a text from a MAC coach that said I missed a call from XXXX can you have her call me back between 8-8.30. I called my player and later she reached the coach.
