So far, we are getting a larger # of entry forms for the advanced hitting session as compared to the intro to hitting session. Based on some of the swings I saw at the QDSN at Kent St. last week, this concerns me a bit. I am afraid our choice of the session name (Intro to Hitting) is a bit misleading. So, here goes an attempt to clarify what type of player each session is targeted towards:
Intro to Hitting
The intro to hitting session is for those players that have yet to adopt or fully learn the elite (or RVP) swing that Howard/Crystl promote. The intro session will likely include an intro to the swing & the following drills: 1) bucket drill, 2) hammer drill, 3) one knee drill, 4) face the fire, 4) back hand/lead hand drill, 6) attack mode, & 7) tee stackers.
So, parents/coaches/players need to ask themselves, how they can get the most of the clinic? If your DD swings down on the ball & squishes the bug, then the intro session is for you. If your DD has never been through the drills listed above, then the intro session is likely for you. If you attended our Bustos/Carrier clinic 2 yrs ago for the 1st time, but have not incorporated the drills into your practice regimen, then the intro session is still likely for you. This is not primarily an age-based decision. Nor is it primarily a "what travel org to you play for" decision. We expect to see a wide mix of ages (9-18 yrs old) & travel org's (including Ice players) represented in the intro session. We have some players that have been to multiple Bustos/Howard clinics and have been through the drills for > 2 yrs, & I believe some are still not ready to participate in the advanced hitting session. All in all, I believe the intro session will offer real insight for the large majority of players/parents.
Advanced Hitting
The advanced hitting session is for those players that have fully adopted or learned the elite (or RVP) swing that Howard/Crystl promote. The advanced session will likely include the following drills: 1) tee stackers, 2) Whip Hit (ball on a rope), 3) timing drop drill, 4) soft toss w/ short tee drill, 5) 2-ball drill, & 6) in-out drill w/ 2 tees.
These are players that have the RVP swing, have been to Bustos/Carrier clinics before (probably multiple times), work the drills listed under the intro session quite frequently, & perhaps have worked with Howard 1-on-1.
Again, we are going to structure the advanced session for what are believed to be the range of skills of the 30 most advanced applicants (this will be tough to decide upon & may likely involve follow-up questions to some applicants). If you applied, but are not selected to the advanced hitting session, then we will likely ask to see if you are intersted in the intro to hitting session. If you, based on reading this post, would like to switch your DD from the advanced to the intro session, please let me know.
I now give the floor to Howard & others (finally).
