I just noticed that the dates include a Thursday. Will there really be play on Thursday? If so, starting at what time?

Thanks.

Jim told me 8 a.m.

Nice to see some of the smaller community travel teams coming out, some of which where your daughter might have started her travel adventures at.

for the oldtimers, this long list of entries resembels how the NSA states used to be. I can remember once at 14u, the ASA state was held down by wright patterson air force base and there was seven teams.

Schedule should...should... be out this week. At last count there are 61 teams entered! (not all are listed)

How many USA/ASA berths are available and on the line??

Assuming at LEAST 4, but with 61+ teams wondering if there are more than that this year? One per 10-12 teams?

will the teams that already qualified that are registered still play? if so, how will the bids be handled?

it would stink to be knocked out early after having played one of the qualified teams and never even get into a position to get a bid passed down to you if the already qualified team were to earn one of the four bids here.

@woolfman:

Yes, it will stink, but that's the reality of the rule that now allows berth holders to play in other qualifiers. And I can certainly see the argument that probably led to the rule change: should a berth holder really have to forfeit its berth in order to play in a geographically close tournament that offers top flight competition? To penalize a berth holder by making that team either skip something as good (both in terms of play and in terms of college coaches) as the 16u ASA States or forfeit its berth in order to play ASA States doesn't make a whole lot of sense either.

The rule change makes it clear that the berth will be passed down to the highest placing team in the tournament that does not yet have a berth.

I guess that's why the call it the luck of the draw.

@wildfire:

We are getting somewhat anxious messages from our families asking about whether we have a Thursday game and, if so, when it will be. Many employers require at least a week's notice for a vacation day. And if our parents aren't able to take a Thursday vacation day, they need to be making arrangements to get their DDs to a Thursday game with one of the other team families.

I'm still not clear on how the tournament is entitled to hold Thursday play, since the ASA Code says that play for National Qualifiers can't begin earlier than Friday. Perhaps it is another of those elusive Local Association exceptions. But the important point is that if there is going to be Thursday play, teams needs to know as early as possible when they are going to play on Thursday.

Please help us out here.

Thanks Ice Black. We got our copy this morning as well. Our pool position was switched from the earlier pool to a the T pool. And we switched with another Central Ohio team. Wonder what that was all about.

Oh well, we are playing Championship Fastpitch and the Ohio Outlaws, so our pool play will consist of hard-fought games, which is great.

Note to self: insist on Friday play as earliest next year.

@IceBlack: it was indeed a great game. After you scored those 5 on us in the top of the 6th, we couldn't have asked for a better opportunity than to be in a position to tie it in the bottom of the 7th. Statistics caught up with us and we couldn't string one more hit to force the ITB. A great game, however, for the memory data bank on the topic "never give up".

And up until that 6th inning it really was a case of both teams hunkering down on defense when there were multiple runners on base. Fun stuff.

See you at the ASA States.
