It wouldn't be a GAPSS discussion without you MD. I hope this weekend still works for you - remember - you are going to come up and drive around with me as - 'TD in training'

... When ASA moved nationals back to first week in August we moved down to late July. ...

ASA didn't move nationals - it was held according to ASA Code on the week ending with the first Saturday in August. That was August 1 in 2009 and August 7 in 2010.

For future reference, ASA made a couple changes this year and the new schedule is:

- ASA A Nationals (e.g. Eastern Nats) sites were given the same choice of weeks as B Nationals, between the weekend of the 3rd Saturday in July and the weekend of the 2nd Saturday in August.

- 18 Gold Nationals was moved up another week to the week before USA/ASA Nationals, ending the weekend with the last Saturday in July.

USA/ASA Nationals remains unchanged, ending the weekend of the 1st Saturday in August.

I think this a logical move for this caliber of tournament. This is a showcase tournament, Ohio needs this tournament and it needs to be in a situation (and date) where it will thrive. Smart Move.

You are right Shayne, we left to try to get some kids seen by some different coaches than the ones we see almost every other week. I had some kids interested in going to school in the south, I thought I was supposed to help my players get where they wanted to go. I guess our 13U Gold team did pretty well against those teams at Loudonville. I know that both of the 16U Lasers, 18U Lasers, Classics Black and many other good Ohio teams were in NC and IL that week end. I

You have every right to play where you want for whatever reason. I must have mis-interpreted "many of the best have been skipping it" to mean something else.;&

You start by saying...
Like anything else, some are happy and some are not. I like the Loudonville setting but do not like the lack of hotels and many of the best teams have been skipping it for other tourneys out of state the last couple of years...

So it should have read...
Like anything else, some are happy and some are not. I like the Loudonville setting but do not like the lack of hotels and a few of the better teams have been skipping it because their players are interested in playing in exposure tourneys out of state that weekend the last couple of years...

But then you go on further to strengthen my initial claim and contradict yourself...
This new date has always been rather week for showcase type tournaments in Ohio. Sorry but we have headed south the last couple of years because of the lack of "good choices here...

So what is it Glen a weak tourney or you want exposure for your players???;&

So if what you say is true...it wouldn't have really mattered if GAPSS would have been on the same weekend as Loudonville last year (or this year to be perfectly honest)...you and many others were heading out of state for whatever reason.

Sorry Glen it's been a slow week now that classes are over. :lmao:

SoCal, what I should have said was - because of the way the calendar fell ASA Nationals were in August and there became an extra weekend in July. I understand that ASA didn't change its code.

These were the reasons given when teams contacted me to see if there was any way we could move it up a week.

Orland Sparks in Chicago, IL
Adidas Event (individual player showcase) in Utah
NSA Nationals travel day Sat 23rd opening cermonies Sun 24th
All Sanctions World Series - opening cermonies Sun 24 th

If the emails I've received since the announcement are any indication, the move is the right one for our tournament, the teams that want to play in it and the college coaches who want to watch them play but only time will tell if that is true.

Shayne, you must really be bored. You also have to remember that Loudonville is only 18U that week, what about all the other teams. I am done. Good luck with who ever you are coaching this year.

Naw, you didn't have to go that far. The rearrangement of 2 words would have been fine...
When ASA nationals moved back to first week in August we moved down to late July.

It's going to be interesting to see how many of the territorial nationals (e.g. Eastern Nats) deviate from the old schedule with the flexibility ASA just gave them.

Not a good move in my opinion, a little selfish to put it bluntly. This will be at least the 3rd time this tourney has been moved the last couple years "in it's best interest." I don't think this is a wise decision. But to each his own.

I would appreciate it if you add a little more. That is pretty general. I know that GAPSS falls on the same weekend as some other major showcases....is that what you're talking about?

You moved from July 4th because of having to compete with "The Best of the Best" now you will have to compete with Loudonville for college exposure. Next to Stingrays and Best of the Best not a tourney in Ohio is better at it. Last year at Loudonville you had all the top 18U teams playing against the top competition. Next year you will change again, further making what was a great tourney into one that is chasing its tail. The top tourneys find a date and dont have to move because of competition with other tourneys. Sorry...facts are facts.

Guess I found what I was asking you. Sorry "Lady" but you're reasoning makes no sense. Isn't this about getting players recognized by college scouts? Well that being the case, why wouldn't a TD try to set it during a time when there isn't another major showcase scheduled?

Application quanitity and quality are way up since the date change announcement.

Also, I have received several emails wondering if teams could still be considered for the 2011 GAPSS tournament since they missed the 12/31 deadline.

NOTE: When we changed the date to July 15-17, we extended the deadline to 1/30 with team announcements being made by 2/15.

Get your applications in. Applications must be post marked on or before 1/20. Team applications have been received from OH, MI, WV, IN, PA. Keep them coming.

Maybe I am missing something. Could someone please enlighten me? Why is the deadline so late? This either a tournament you want to be in or not. Is the application 40 pages long? To me it's simple....... Give the teams a fair deadline but also make it fair for teams that dont make it. This while process could be made a lot more efficient. :).

You are either very confident you will get in or did not apply. I am not always the best at making friends and influencing people but hey, you can wait till the end of January I would think.

No, I am sorry. We decided a couple years ago when we went to a 'team selection' process that it wouldn't be appropriate to list teams who applied because some teams might not be selected. Hope you understand.
