I started a new thread for GAPSS to make information more readily available.

A couple of updates:
  • We have just one opening available at 10u remaining. Thanks to the Venom, Ohio Ice - Orange, and Ohio Classics for taking three of the open 4 spots.
  • We were able to accept another team at 14u. Ohio Lady Lasers 98 Red has joined what was already a very competitive field.
Follow GAPSS on Facebook and Twitter to receive tournament updates including updates as college coaches sign up to attend.

Go to www.gapss.org for team lists and tournament information. T-shirt design and pre-order forms due out in the next couple of weeks.

I just checked the 14U pool play and I don't see the Laser Red 98 listed. Was there a change or did they take the place of one of the teams listed?

When are you doing the blind draw for the championship bracket? If it is going to be a blind draw, cant it be done before hand, so teams will know when they play?

Just asking,

thanks

I just assumed that when the web site says a blind draw at some point in the tournament, Mike was indicating that it would be a blind draw attended by coaches so there would be no question whether the draw was indeed blind.

Is there a specific time the blind draw will happen? Who may attend the draw? What is the criteria for the blind draw? Straight up or pool winners, records into consideration at all, etc? Just wondering as blind doesn't always mean blind. Having it explained before would seem to head off any tantrums.

I agree with an earlier poster, if it is blind then it would be nice to have it posted earlier. Perhaps after everyone's first games? That way there are no "no shows" drawn but everyone knows who they will be playing.

From TD's email:

The blind draw for the single elimination championship bracket will take place at 2:30 on Friday at the Liberty Park Concession area. The championship bracket board will be updated at Liberty Park and the website will be updated by the end of the day.

Note that for the 10u through 14u, the pool play results will determine the seeding for the double elimination bracket play. For 16/18u, a blind draw will take place at a time TBD during the tournament to place teams onto the single elimination bracket.

Sorry everyone, I was out of town for work (during GAPSS week, can you believe that?). I think the question of the blind draw has been answered but here it is again, it will take place at 2:30 on Friday at Liberty Park concession stand. Everyone (or no one) can attend but it will be done in the open so anyone can see. As fastpitchrox said, pool play results do count for 10u-14u regarding double elimination seeding.

I considered doing it ahead of time but I was all but certain I would have been accused of rigging it :))) and it is just more fun to do it live. It adds to the excitement.

Thanks for the answer. Definitely well thought out. Let's all hope the rain stays away, the clouds are plentiful and the temperatures are cooler.

In putting a wrap on the 9th Annual 2011 GAPSS tournament, I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for their participation in and patronage of our tournament.

I would also like to congratulate our Champions and Runner ups:

10U
Michigan Pride - Champion
Ohio Ice Orange - Runner Up

12U
Ohio Hawks Lenos - Champion
Lasers Purple - Runner Up

14U
Ohio Ice - Champion
Classics 96 - Runner Up

16/18U
Lasers White - Champion
Buckeye Heat Haas - Runner Up

It is worth noting that this tournament is the first being run by a new leadership group. And while no tournament ever runs perfectly and we can always strive to improve, I could not have been more impressed by the hard work and dedication of the board of directors, site coordinators and volunteers.

From the college showcase perspective, we were very pleased with the number of colleges represented and coaches in attendance. The feedback we received was they were very pleased with the opportunities they had to watch talented players.

Thanks again, good luck for the rest of the season and watch for GAPSS 2012 announcement in September.

@Mike:

Well run tournament, lots of college coaches. We will be back if you will have us. (I still wonder if we did something to tick you off, since we drew the trifecta of three 8:00 am games; j/k :p as I know the consideration of start times for pool play has to be a lower-tier priority for all the things that a TD has to consider and I also know there is no way you could have rigged the blind draw to produce this result.)

I'm afraid that technology has made the fastpitch community awfully demanding about seeing quick posting of results. Any chance that we will see a more user friendly lay-out of the game results soon? We will provide our results here on OFC in the polls section, but I really don't know what the game results were of other 16u-18u teams during the elimination brackets and (less importantly), it takes a lot of time to decipher the on-line results regarding the pool play.

Thanks to you and all of your staff for your hard work. All of our interaction with you and your staff was nothing but positive. And I think the changes that you made for this year's tournament were spot on: 1) consolidating the 16u-18u tournament; 2) making results of the increased number of pool play games irrelevant to the elimination bracket (thus making it easier for the TB coaches to get their players in and at the right positions to allow college coaches to evaluate the players) and 3) making sure that those games were scheduled for convenient locations for college coaches. All these greatly enhanced the tournament's desirability for college coaches.

Drawing off of a previous comment from a college recruiter, if you could get enough of those tents for the 16u-18u games and set them up in a "reserved" section for college coaches, you would have a near perfect set-up for the college exposure aspect.

To someone who posted on another thread: I don't think you can rely on the "college sign-in" listing as an accurate statement of how many college coaches saw at least one of the games. I saw college coaches who weren't on the GAPSS web site or on the college sign-in list watching games at this tournament.

And finally, in the category of "Ohio fast-pitch ironies", GAPSS is this year taking shots because of umpires in the heat when last year it was shots about reacting to the torrential rain. (And then there are the semi-shots from me about scheduling and posting results.). You couldn't pay me enough to take on the job of TD for this tournament. Congrats to the TD and his staff/volunteers for a great weekend of ball.
