24 hours to accept, really?!

I just got done speaking with a parent of a player that I have known for years and was told that their dd would not be at our tryouts this weekend. It seems that a second year org in our area is giving these families 24 hours to accept or forfeit the offer.

I am a little miffed that they are strong arming these people and playing on their fears that they may not make another team. On the other hand I think I am a bit jealous that they are grabbing up a bunch of talent. LoL

24 hours!! WoW

What is the typical time to accept? DD and family are new to the travel side.

Maybe they are in a hurry to get statrted with practice and the Fall season of tournaments.

But, yes it is kind of odd.

Plain stupid. I would want my players to be fully commited to my team knowing they made the best decision they could after they reviewed all options. You can't tell me the 24 hours kids/parents won't have 2nd thoughts at some point wondering what could have been.

The old one call close has been around in many highly respected industries for years.

Such as....
Door to door vacuum sales
in home window sales
buy here pay here car sales
water filtration sales
time share sales
and many respectable infomercials

Why not for travel softball? :p

If I want a player, I ask them if they are attending any other tryouts. If they answer yes, then I ask them to give me their decision after they have attended all the tryouts they wish to attend. The last thing you want on your team is a parent or player who feels they were forced into staying with you out of fear. I would rather have the player for the year after weighing all their options than to leave in April because they made a quick decision that they now regret. If they aren't attending tryouts I ask them to call me after they have discussed it as a family.

no I agree here with Doug, this org if it is the same one i believe it is, is doing just that. Strong arming girls and parents, they started tryouts while many teams were at nationals and now want a kid not to be given the chance to see what other orgs are about and how much better they are than theirs.

I want kids and parents that want to be in our organization, not ones that were forced or scared to be in it.

A week to 10 days should be given this early in the tryout season.

And how many of us regreted the choice we made in all these cases.

I wouldn't be too worried about grabbing all of the "talent". The true talent is in the drivers seat, NOT the organization. A truly talented player in this scenario would just laugh and say, "I have many more options than you do, I'll get back with YOU."

I can see them getting maybe a few 1st timers like that but once the DD's and parents get to know what travel is like they will realize that this is not normal and there are plenty of teams out there. Your dd will make a team all you have to do is look. The hardest part is finding the right fit.

Flip it around and try it on. Your returning 9 or 10 players just looking to fill a few spots left by kids aging up, or leaving. You get 20 kids at tryouts and you have 4 or 5 suitable prospects to fill 2 or 3 spots. How long after you talk to prospects 1 and 2 can you wait before offering the spots to 3-5? Not unheard of to ask for an answer on the spot. We're holding our tryouts pretty late this year, so reasonably I expect to know by Sunday who's on our teams after the final tryouts Saturday. IMO if we offer them a spot after a tryout and they want to wait to hear from someone else, then we're not their first choice and I'm in favor of moving on, on the spot to the next on the list. Probably make exceptions for a player that is waiting to hear if the team they have been with is going to field a team again. I can respect wanting to remain loyal and would be willing to wait on that.

Granted we're not a second year org, but not sure that's the driving factor in the time constraint.

What!!! How about the player waiting for a offer but won't get one because the coach made an offer to someone else and has to wait 14 days until player 1 accepts or rejects after all other tryouts. This does not seem right. Put your daughter in player 2's shoes.

14 days is a bit extreme if you ask me. During those 14 days that player is free to accept a position on another team or wait for the call. Either way the player/parents are free to make a decision and explore other options.

What we are talking about is being denied the opportunity to explore other options, forcing a decision. Doesn't really work on seasoned players/parents, but it is the younger players, the life blood of an organization, that fall victim to this kind of tactic.

Give them 24 hours, no more then 48 hours. If they can't make up their mind, move on, you weren't their first choice. If you wait more then 48 you won't have a team.

I agree! A player/family should "click" instantly with a team. They should do their research of team finances, players and coaches before trying out.

If you are new to travel then you have no idea what to research. That first year is where you learn the ropes. You have to give the kids a break. As we all know it is a big decision. They should be able to have some time. It doesn't click immediately for everyone. All kids are different. It takes some a litle time to decide what they want to do. Especially the younger ones.

Anyone looking to get into travel ball should have enough sense to research organizations ahead of time. There are enough teams to walk if you wish but I don't see a problem with a time line.

A time line is ok as long as it is within reason. 24 hrs is too short.

No one is being strong armed. Just say no. 3DM your team is still an option to your player from last year.
