24 hours to accept, really?!

Cmon Knights,
Everything you say is true with the more experienced and older girls. Most of us all know the girls by know in the general area we are all from. Most of the top talent doesn't have to go to tryout there excepted on past ability or recruited to teams. But these decisions do go on in the younger and less experienced age groups. There are alot of girls that fit into these catagories with start up teams and tons of teams I've never even heard of before.

So if your heading to tryouts you are going without any prior knowledge of the team or organization? So your dad got you up one Saturday morning and says "hey lets drive over to _____ and see if they are holding softball tryouts then we'll head over to _____ and see if they are having tryouts." Don't know anything about them but who cares its travel ball!

If there are people actually doing this, even at the younger ages, then they deserve what they are getting. I know I was oblivious to travel when my first DD started, but I talked to people, got online (think that is when I joined OFC) and educated myself. Went to 1 tryout, was offerd a spot, and took it! Was the best thing that ever happened to my DD and I have the Late Tim Galligher to thank for it. God Rest Tim and the GFOD Thunder!!!

Couple of clarifying points..

We have only finished our second year in fastpitch...DD played boys ball up until then. So we are not truly in the 'know', but hear lots of things.

Our team from last year is not an option...Coach is staying 12u, and Org does not plan on fielding a 14u team...hence my search.

We have narrowed it down to these two. Both have good reps...heard both the good and bad feedback on both...still 50/50 in terms of support out in general public. We will only go to these two tryouts.

We talked and what is important to us is finding a 'program' that develops girls and promotes learning and college exposure. Both these do that. We want to find a program that fits us so we can hitch the wagon to it for years to come.

Thus the dilemma. Do we call it a day after getting the first offer without getting an equal opportunity to see if the other fits?

Do we place all our bets on an org that took the random choice of early tryout dates over others?

It is a bummer the two are about 10 days apart..and not closer.

I totally see the points made regarding the coach's dilemma and how long to wait.
This should be fun not stressfull!!!

Call both coaches and try to schedule a private tryout with one of them to bring them together on the same day, or consecutive days. That will work in your favor, as well as both teams involved. That is why coaches post their phone numbers in their tryout listings.

Best of luck. ;)

If there is a player or players that you know you want, you have to have, then try to seal the deal that day (or night) with the young lady and parents. Your hopes in for them to join there on the spot with no more tryouts in mind for them.
You can not say you have 1 or 2 days to say yes to us or we will move on.

But to put a 24 hour time limit on their head to put them under the gun.............

And to you I can completely understand your dilemma and and I don't envy you.

Don't misunderstand me...I don't live by the "24 Hour" rule myself and give as much time as I can. What I normally say is...

"Here is my offer...where do you stand on taking this offer, with the understanding that I cannot wait forever on your decision. With all the other things going on behind the scenes with other players I'm making offers to I can't give you a set deadline. When I need a decision, I will get back to you if I don't hear from you first, at that point I will need your final decision. It could be a week or it could be in 24 hours, but I have to do whats best to make this team happen and what's in it's best interest."

So when that final call is made it goes something like this "Hello this is Coach Yeater and I was just getting back to you on whether you were ready to take that spot I offered you and the chance to play for a great coach with one of the top organizations in Ohio? Pause...Well Congratulations and Welcome to the team!!!":yahoo:

Well seeing as every year I seem to be in the tryout scene, I'd have to say the teams that don't preasure you into a decision are the ones who I tend to lean towards. Especially if you have your tryout in early August you have to realize that I would love to play for your team, but there may be a team that's closer, cheaper, etc. I know that there are other girls but there was a reason I tried out for your team. If I make you wait it's not because I'm waiting for another offer but it's because I want to play with you, I just don't have all my info and options and I want to be able to give 100% to my team and be happy about it.

We had a player and her dad talk to us at the end of our tryouts last night and said that she had attended another tryout that weekend........ thats ok by me I tell every one of my players to attend other tryouts and to see whats out there, what I found as odd was that they gave her till Tues to make a decision. So basically 2 days to make a decision....... we have informed everyone that we would not make a decision on our tryouts until the process was complete after next Sundays tryouts and then inform everyone as to our decision.

I understand 18,s are difficult to field but come on........... 2 days?....... and theres still a ton of tryouts going on for the next 2 weeks everywhere...... It amazes me how some coaches will try and strong arm kids into a position that may not be in their best interest. If your that desperate maybe you need to re think your ability to attract and coach kids

Unfortunately some teams are willing to go to these kind of lengths to field a team, its not the players fault.
They need to realize that on the other hand a couple of their better players didnt look bad at our tryouts either...;& its a vicious circle.

How long do the Hawks give to make a decision after their final try outs? We give 3 days from the day we make an offer...I know other teams, even the 'elite' teams give less than that....

The hawks have a 2 week window, thats why we did both the 18 and the college exposure in unison........ kids have 2 weeks to try out and see other orgs. so to answer your question we give kids a 2 week window to see the world and make a decision.......... my thought is the tryout season is still early, if she wants to join a team , she will join it. I would rather her go somewhere else if shes not sure .. she does herself or her team mates no good by joining by pressure............ hope this helps

So after your last try-out how long do you guys give? Personally I have talked to a couple coaches who wanted an answer before we ended the phone call!! And I agree, that you should give players ample time to make a decision, but two weeks would take you into September. I don't think we are desperate by offering 3 days from the time we make an offer and I think our coach (from Wittenberg) has a pretty good handle on how to run things.

It is a wicked dance we all engage in August....everyone looking for the best situation they can get!!

I posted earlier that 24 to 48 is plenty of time. Coaches can't wait more then that because the next choice won't be there in 6 or 7 days. You do your research and you give a decision based on your choice. Our coach made her offers on the spot, our choices all accepted and our team was full Sunday night.

I think you are right and we are right in line with that; giving them 3 days after our offer. We made our first line of offers Saturday night and gave 3 days to look around if they chose to do so...I think that is fair on both sides....

So, just to be clear ... theoretical example ... stud player attends your tryout last weekend ... you offer them a spot ... they say they want to go to another tryout next weekend ... you tell them they have 3 days and don't hold their spot? Of course that is not the case ... so you really do give them more than 3 days ... just depends on who it is, right?

Like bouldersdad says, you want players that want to play for your team. You don't want to twist anyone's arm but you need to put a team together. Luckily for us, one player would not make or break us and most of our attendees were serious about playing for a team that will be seen by college coaches. But theoretically, if the team existing depended on a single player committing, I think you would be at their mercy, but we are not in that position in reality.

So you go to a tryout, you get offered a spot on your #1 choice, do you say "I want to go to another tryout next weekend and then I will give you an answer?" Of course not.

essentially with the way tryouts are, all spread out over the month of august, as a coach you need to move quickly when your interested in a player or 2 and as a parent/player you need a real plan when you go into tryouts.

Some teams are looking for 1 specfic type of player or maybe 2, they can afford to wait on a stud if they feel that player will put them over the top, other teams can't wait. Stud or not, there are alot of good players, would be better to land a very good player that wants to play for you, then a stud that really is looking for something else. Just IMO.

A lot of players don't know if they want to play for an organization until they do go try out and meet the coaches, and hear what they have to say. Maybe they want to see if they can make say the Lasers and, if not, they would be more than happy to play for the other team ... but the Lasers tryout is the following week ...

So is the consensus that we are in line with giving 3 days to decide? It seems like most give less?!
