I can not find a rule that prohibits us from inviting 7th and 8th grade pitchers and catchers to work out with our H.S. pitchers and catchers when H.S. players report on 2-19-07. Does anyone know of are rule that would prohibit that? I do not what to jeopardize their H.S. eligibility. If there is no rule, when should we no longer allow them to work out with the H.S., after final cuts?

Hey Bear, would the above rules only be in effect for team/individual practices/scrimmages from the the Feb 19th reporting date on? I've seen open gyms out of season for several different sports at several different schools allow 7/8th graders.

I believe Bink 44 is correct. Read 6.1.1 and 6.1.2

Open gym is not considered a Practice or Paticipating on the same team with 9-12 th grade. It must be opened and not mandantory astttendance and anyone can atttend that belongs to that school district, as long as the doors are not locked anyone can also observe.. As usual this is the way around section 40.3 and 40.4.

Bink and SB, you are correct.
Open Gyms are not practice sessions, and no coaching is aloud. So 7th/8th graders would be fine at an open gym. But once practice starts, stick a pen and paper, or a water bottle in there hands, they make good Jr. High managers.

The way I read it you're okay for open gyms, but the second "practice" starts you're in conflict. So, yes I believe you are correct.

Man did I ever misread the initial question. ?I was thinking conditioning, not practice. ?Sorry, my bad. I have deleted my previous post.

What our AD was told after 2-19-07, ( Pitcher and catchers) they cannot work out with the team, because you start having coach's present and it is a mandantory practice and no longer an open gym. .., but while we are on this subject. I have seen high school teams have 8'th graders go to tournaments outside the state and play on the high school team after this date. Do they get around this rule because they are no longer in the state of Ohio? Lady Knight , I'm sure you have seen this as a high school coach, I did when I coached in hihg school..

Every state is different when it comes to there regulations. Kentucky allows 8th graders to play for the HS team.
I've never been able to travel out of state with my HS, we usually only get Friday and Monday off for break. But you couldn't get away with playing an 8th grader, out of state if your on a team from Ohio, OHSAA rules follow you wherever you play.

There are some high schools in the state of Ohio that travel on sring break to other states. They have taken non high school players with them. Now that you are a 14U traveling team coach, you might run across this like I did. I also know that some of the 14U teams have coachs that are non paid coachs on the high school program and have no idea about the no contact rule . This year it is 8-4 thru 9-7, If you have tournaments then , you will run into some of them. I'm sure they have not been told the rules. It's fun being on both sides , traveling and high school. Keeps you busy.

Its an OHSAA rule, and is not covered anywhere in the softball rule book.

They used to have it duplicated in every sport's rules but decided to move it to the General Sports Regulations which covers everyone.

If a 6 grade girl got caught practicing with a 7th through High school team what would happen ,who would be punished the 6 grade girl or the school.
