I took my DD to two 15u/16u tryouts this weekend. Both were for very well known organizations here in southwest Ohio. I can't believe the amount of wasted time at these tryouts. Now granted, there were 30-40 girls at each tryout but while doing hitting, every girl that wasn't hitting stood in the outfield to shag balls. One of these tryouts took 75 minutes just for hitting. I don't know what the answer is but there has got to be a better way. Each location had at least one other field available to use if they wanted to. Maybe split up to do some drills or something?

Like I said, I don't claim to have the answer. But I know someone here on OFC does.

Good luck to all as you make your decisions for your next season.

Right over here!
You see that a lot. The more coaches the more stations you can run. At one of the try outs we went to the head coach walked around to multiple stations and talked to the coaches running them. Less down time for kids and more activated to evaluate talent. The thing i liked the most was each kid was graded and then the scores were brought together from each station. As a parent I walked away with a sheet telling me where my kid did well and where they needed improvement.

Or....you go to a tryout and it appears that the head coach isn't really even paying attention to what is going on. I'm guessing because they already have their team picked. This may even be the same tryout location, but different age group. DON'T WASTE OUR TIME! How about you announce the positions you are looking for?

I just have to add that this weekend I witness two organizations with the most efficient tryouts. Girls were constantly moving and working hard. Hats off to Lasers and Ohio Power for having the best tryouts I've ever been to in the 6 years I've been involved in travel. If I had to pick a winner, I would say Power was slightly better. It was more like a clinic or camp than a tryout. My kid got an awesome workout!

I know we had multiple compliments on our 11:00-1:00 Xpress tryout for the 18u gold. We used some of Britts warm up/work out routine from Louisville that went over really well, the players left sore and dirty lol.

I would agree. I was at the Power this weekend and it was efficiently ran.

Most coaches of top-level and/or older teams know from previous season(s) which players are of interest to them. Their tryouts are mainly an attempt to lure the players they want. It is extremely rare an unknown player will 'wow" them at a tryout.

Coaches should be contacted before tryouts, especially for 14U teams and above. Besides checking their needs and getting on their radar, you should be able to find out whether they're familiar with your DD and their level of interest in her. It's just part of the homework that needs to be done before deciding which tryouts to attend.

I would be more wary of the the tryouts that don't have some standing around. IMHO the good tryouts are designed such that every girl gets to be looked at, at every station, and by all of the coaches she'll be playing for - you can't do that if you run 4 different stations at the same time for the same group of girls. Tryouts aren't a practice, they are a skills and personality assessment.

SoCal_Dad: Excellent advise for the older groups. Hope people take this to heart.

No tryout is perfect you just have to try and make the best of every situation and try to prepare your DD the best that you can for them.

I do know that neither lasers 04 or 05 had a team already picked and that there were multiple people from both the 04&05 looking at all the kids and discussing what they had seen, its unfortunate that you felt that way.

We offered to kids at 9 and 10 in Ontario and that still did not fill the rosters of the teams.
