How's this for an analogy: NFL Pro Scouting Combine.

It let's your talent be seen. You can't pick who's going to be watching.

Again... Novel idea. May work. May not. (They thought Christopher Columbus was a whack-job, too.)

Kids as opposed to adults at the combine? I don't want to go there.

I could see booths set up like credit card companies..."If you sign with us today, go over and pick out a free bat!"

I think it would be a great way for some of the newer pitching or hitting coaches trying to get some clients, and maybe even the well-established coaches might also set up. How often do we see requests on the board looking for coaches?

If it even partially works, this could become an annual event that would improve every year. I can't see a downside of not trying, but it will need more than just one night of planning right before the event. Might need a couple of meetings!

Doesn't hurt to try, were my kid 12 or 14 I would certainly consider signing up for it.

Billy 07-
I think you have come up with a good idea. I think what would also help objectively help parents and players decide about teams at combines is to publish in a parent/player handout/program:
1. years org has existed
2. years coach's have been with organization
3. coach's experience
4. team's record and previous schedule
5. returning players
6. positions needed
this should be posted online so players and parents can already have an idea where they want to go and who they want to pursue. This would be a handout that includes ALL teams involved.

There are pros and cons to this, I agree also.. Dont think we would need to police, I think the teams/organizations that agree to work together will be decent each other. When you are grading players, look at all of them, if you just focus on the 'best ones' you could miss a good one, bring your tryout grading sheets. get names, phone #s.. The family and player will decide the best place for their dd to play. To be honest, I cant see one of the 'bigger' organizations getting in this. This will fit the 'B' teams better because if the kid is that elite of a player she will just work out privately. This is more for the teams that will take a player that was cut by a bigger organization/team but is still good enough to play and make a difference. I have talked to a few different teams already. They think this is possible. After we get a good size list we will post it. Again, pros and cons to both sides. Thank you all for the opinions and ideas, even if you think this is a bad idea, you are giving good reasons and with that, helping us with ideas to avoid the promblems you have stated.

You are picking what will be the most popular day if the Try-out Season - Saturday, Aug. 10th..........
So many of those wanting to play for the Elite Teams will not know their status. With your above opinions, I would say the following weekend would work better for what you are hoping for..........

Good Luck

For us in the south still using aluminum bats can you get it broadcast on ESPN ? I might want to send a pony express letter to some kid. JK .. not quite sure what to think about this one.

You still let ESPN in your house after they kicked Hank Jr. off Monday night football?

So with so many orgs buying in, who decides what drills the players do for evaluation purposes? Live pitching or machine? What speed? Agree it's outside the box thinking but I still don't care for the idea.

I would say in meetings.. We would all go over a game plan for this. what drills to run, live or machine pitching... ect. August 10th is a great day for this because thats when all the kids will be out. point is why go to 1 tryout when you can be seen by 5 to 10 teams at once. Right now its 3 organizations in. When we get closer we will release the list. For other organizations thinking about this, take a shot, no risk no reward. We think it could be a great event for years to come. They always say the 1st guy through the wall gets bloody.. Im willing to be that guy for all the players, parents, teams, organizations and try something out side the box.

Still not a fan of this idea. Even if you would have enough interest, I don't think there is any way you could do it by Aug. 10th of this year. I could be wrong, but with tournaments and Nationals thru the week before... Not sure it could be organized properly. Maybe an idea for next year. Organize a committee, get vendors, Teams, Hitting instructors, Defensive instructors, etc all on board. Could be on to something.

I personally like the idea of a combine for athletes. Most of the time unless your kid is a pitcher or catcher they will go un-noticed. Do you know who the great outfielders are in the state? Do you know where they rank as far as speed? Your kid is going to be judged whether you show up or not. AND if you can get some really good talent to show it raises the bar even higher for the rest of the girls. It shows these girls that some have raw talent while others have to work hard. It can also serve as a motivator. With that said, this venue might be better served for 14u and up. Plus, this is already being done in showcase combines for these girls to perform in-front of college coaches and if they become used to the format, they'll perform that much better in front of the college coaches.

As a parent of a 12u player who is definitely looking for a new organization I like this idea and may be a "B" level player. I really like lewam3 idea so that parents/players can get info beforehand.

Seriously, Billy07, you may be on to something. (Or, as some are thinking, On something...)

Being a first attempt, I doubt if your turnout will be very high. Future years; maybe. I think the timing is the issue. Nobody will want to miss the tryouts of the teams they really want in order to test the waters of a combine. Maybe switch it to a Sunday?...

Overall, I think it's a good idea. From a parents perspective, if you only wanted to play for a team in NE Ohio, you can go to one spot instead of Aurora, Tallmadge, Elyria, Youngstown, etc. How much money can be saved just in gas money not to mention fast food money? Not only that, it gives your dd multiple looks from different coaches if the first choice doesn't offer. If you think about it, it's already being done by larger organizations with multiple age teams in said age bracket.
