Another rule question help

The situation: ?a batter is hit by pitch and is awarded 1st Base, as it should be. ?Now, here is the situation, the umpire then asks the batter that was just hit and on 1st base if she wishes to stay at 1st or continue her at bats. ?She chose to go back to the plate an continue her at bat. ?

First of all I had never seen this before and was not aware it was an option, even though it could be I just don't know. ?However, if it is a rule for the batter to continue her at bat instead of taking the base, is it the responsibility of the umpire to give her the choice, or should it be her or her coach request and invoke the rule if it is a high school rule. ?

Please help, since this did actually happen and I am curious to know the rule both for high school and ASA.

Thanks in advance and anxious to learn something new. ?

Where in the world did this occur??? I thought I had heard it all?? The batter does not have an option, nor should she be given one. If a coach allows this, I would probably go looking for another coach.

Actually, I've heard of this happening before.

And when it happened, it was a totally wrong decision by the umpire!

No options allowed- if you're awarded a base you are required to take it.

Thanks Bretman,

At my ripe old age and hundreds and hundreds of games watching and coaching I had never heard of such a thing. I could not believe it was really happening but it did happen just as I stated. Since I am more familiar with ASA than High School, I wanted to make sure and I was positive you would know.

Sorry to use you in this manner, since I am always here reading but seldom post, I knew you would know the answer because I think you are the most knowledgeable person on here and give straight answers with trying to argue or make some comment about the person posting.

Thank you very much and I appreciate it. I always read your posts and a few others, since I know they are actual facts without any under tones.

Have a great week and thanks again.

Sincerely,

Lady Knights,

It did actually happen, but I will not give location or umpires. Also as an added note they both agreed on the rule. ?I am sure some people that read this forum can confirm it did happen.

I do have a question for you in this matter. ?You posted "If a coach allows this, I would probably go looking for another coach" ?

I may not understand something here, but you seem to be saying that if an umpire makes a mistake, go get another coach. ?I am even more confused but I guess age does that to us old timers. ?

I would appreciate any help you could give and explain how you would handle it, since the umpires are in control of the game and the coach is in control of his team. ?

I do realize that umpires do mistakes just as coaches and players but I still respect and admire them for what they do for all the young ladies. ?

Related to this post...How many of you have witnessed your player being hit by a pitch (usually a pitch that skips through the box and clips her shoe) and your batter does not immediately go to first base so the umpire doesn't call it? I always instruct my batters to immediately drop their bat and head to first but for some reason, unless the ball strikes them squarely, they hesitate and put doubt in an umpire's mind. It drives me nuts!
