I believe it applies to coaching in a game or clinic type setting where the dad is actually performing coaching duties. He can do as much individual instruction with his daughter as he likes.

He is on staff at the HS as well as coach. And I mean team setting not individual or private.

Commom sense would tell you that he and she are exempt from the rule so they probably can't talk to each according to OHSAA. When does a dad talk to his teenage DD anyway.

Never heard of a situation yet where someone got in trouble for coaching their own kid. While its not spelled out, believe OHSAA wouldn't go this route ... would be political suicide.

Evil,

I have copied and pasted below the rule from the OHSAA website. Since it appears the player to which you refer is the only girl from that particular high school on the summer team, the coach is ok. High school coaches, you will find, are professional and do their due diligence to do what is right for their high school and its athletic programs;)

4.9) Members of the Interscholastic Coaching Staff - Team Sports - In non-interscholastic participation (contests, tryouts, training and practices) in team sports, members of the school's interscholastic coaching staff may coach interscholastic squad members from the school district where employed for a maximum of 10 days from June 1 to July 31. The 10-day limitation applies to the entire coaching staff. Each individual coach is not entitled to 10 different days for coaching.

Note: The Board of Directors may further limit the number of contact days during this period as specified in the specific sports regulations.

EXCEPTION 1: The paid or unpaid interscholastic coach employed by a Board of Education or other governing board may coach interscholastic squad members from the school district where the coach is employed as coach without limitation from June 1 through July 31 if the 50% limitation is observed. The 50% limitation is defined as a maximum of 50% of the members of a team as defined in the playing rules of the sport. The following chart indicates those limitations for OHSAA recognized team sports.

50% Limitation on Sport Number of squad members
Baseball 4
Basketball 2
Field Hockey 5
Football 5

****** 5

Softball 4

I'm a slow learner. This is my second time thru, so you think I might get it this time around! Carol, you know I'm no fan of OHSAA, but if you have to play with these stupid rules, you might as well learn them. Shayne Yeater has the same problem, so we try to keep up .

Grizz posted the wrong ruling to your question.. I cannot cut and paste 4.11 but it covers coaches who have blood relatives playing for them and it states 4.9 doesn't apply.

Not to beat a dead horse but...
4.11 only addresses the 50% rule. ie. A nonscholastic team may exceed the 4 player rule if the girls are siblings. It does not address a parent coaching his or her child in both high school and nonscholastic softball.
Contacted OHSAA months ago on this subject and their response was: under 4 players from same HS - OK; Over 4 players (non-siblings) - NOT ok **Over 4 non-sibling players falls under the 10 contact limit
