Another Tryout Question

Just got home from the store with the other half :D.

We ran into another parent whose dd plays travel in another age group. In our discussion of tryouts, we know we should come early to do paper work and get the lay of the land etc.

but the question is about warm ups. from my experience in the lower age groups 10's & 12's do & their experience in 14's & 16's is they don't

do all age groups do a team warm up or not? I have seen them in the lowers the other parent not in the uppers.

so should I assume when dd gets old enough that she will have to do her own warm up in a tryout at 14, 16, 18?

In general, getting to the tryouts early to knockout paperwork is always good. Then it's also common for players and parents to slip off to a corner somewhere and get warmed up. If warm up time isn't offered, you don't want to be caught not ready.

Side Tip: Bring your DD's attired appropriately. Ready to play a GAME. Under Armor, sliders, sunglasses, visors, batting gloves,,etc. Why nobody asks these girls to slide, I don't know. I'd rather see if they know how to slide, than what their home to home time is.

im moving up to 16u this year and i have finally made my dad realize that we have to get there HALF AN HOUR EARLY for paperwork, warm-ups, etc. usually right after i get done with the paperwork n stuff ill just grab someone and ask if they wanna throw. then i do my own streches off somewhere. a few teams have accually given us time for streching, trowing, etc but id just get there early for every tryout just in case ;D

Most of the tryouts I've seen state to get there 30 minutes early to complete application forms and warm-up / stretch for all age groups.

Agree with Thunder Roads comments, haven't seen any sliding.

We always have all the players get together with players in the age range and stretch and warm-up. During that time we try to get to know the players a little and also explain why we do the stretches that we do. In most cases in the older age groups we even have some players step up and lead a stretch or two. Its a good way to get to know them a little while also impressing on them just how important a good stretching routine is to being an explosive athlete.

As you're completing the paperwork, you should take notice of how things are organized. Are other kids off throwing, jogging, stretching, etc.? Ask one of the coaches if they have an organized warm-up routine, or should you do your own warm-up.

Pitchers should especially get there early - I'd suggest 40 - 45 minutes early for them. 10 minutes or so for paperwork, 10 minutes jog/stretch, 20 minutes for pitching warm-up. Beware: You are "trying out" from the time you step out of the car. This includes parents.

Sammy,

You are 100% correct in that you (parents and players) are trying out as soon as you step out of the car. I watch who's carrying the batbag (DD or parent?), how the DD is interacting with parent, her reactions to parent, etc. I also watch which players are going to take charge and ask someone else to throw with them, and how they go about their business. Tells you alot about how those individuals may interact with you and the remainder of the team during the year.

Buckeye Heat 97 makes a great point. I recommend doing the same but with the coaches. Try to evaluate how they interact with the girls, what drills they do, etc

At 15u my daughter carries the bags (as does my younger son) and she fills out the paper work. All I do is drive and sign the parent signature on the paperwork. She then finds someone to warm up with, and stretches before the tryout starts.

I know at our tryouts last year the coaches had the girls warm up as a group, oh and yes we even had a sliding station.

Are you saying I am one of the few that believes in warm ups? LOL

Here's the thing. All players should begin warming up on their own at tryouts. Then when I get in an lead warm ups it doesn't take as long and I can see who is in a mental state of mind that understands the need to warm up properly.

This is one of the big reasons we have our paperwork online so it can be completed prior to arriving. Simply hand it in, get a number and picture taken and be off to prepare.:yahoo:

First, thank you to all who posted with opinions and suggestions.

Second, update on the two tryouts we have been thus far.

keep in mind one 14u the other 16u.....

warm up 14u throwing

warm up 16u throwing progession, and some foot skill running warmups

of course we were there early and did our own stretching not as much as I would like to see her do but did some.

guess they were looking to see who was doing their own work.
